521497 2007-02-04 06:12:00 I will be sticking with XP until such time as microsoft prevents it from being activated anymore, it becomes too unsecure, etc etc and then I may get a Mac or use Linux, and then Vista for any gaming I might have, purely because when running fullscreen games I cannot see the crappy interface vista uses. not that it LOOKS crap, mind you - it looks lovely, it's just impossible to use unless you are a lombotomized zombie.

is there a transformation pack to make vista look like the "classic windows" or 98 styled theme without the stupid new explorer layout?? lol :D

(waits for the screaming to start)

521498 2007-02-04 06:41:00 What a joke, I would love to see Apple take a bigger market share, But not if it means more dribble from the "enlightened".
IIRC the Mac market share is about 5%, so there's no imminent threat to PC dominance Metla, and we can all sleep easier tonight. That percentage just about equates with the loopy fringe of the computer world (or the loopy fringe for the planet probably) so after Jobs goes to prison for fraud it may all die a natural death.

Personality-driven products rarely succeed beyond the use-by date of their driver, which may explain why MS is so dominant, Gates hasn't got a personality to speak of.

Cheers

521499 2007-02-04 06:43:00 I think MS are going to keep supporting XP till at least 2011 or possibly a bit longer depending on consumer demand. Having said that, with dual boot or parallel systems becoming more efficient I think more people are going to be running 2 or more systems on the one box from here on in, especially the likes of software and web developers. winmacguy (3367)
521500 2007-02-04 06:47:00 I wouldn't see the Mac market share threatening MS any time soon, but I don't see it shrinking into oblivion either. More like a gradual increase of between 2-5% each year considering that around 50% visitors/customers to Apple stores are PC users. Apple will just keep nibbling away at Microsoft's fading dominance with the likes of Google competiting against Microsoft as well. winmacguy (3367)
521501 2007-02-04 07:06:00 If you could build your own Mac for gaming that would defeat the purpose of buying the whole package from Apple since they would have no control over where you sourced the hardware from and no control over how it runs on the machine. It is not right or wrong although it probably seems strange from a gamers perspective, it is just the way that Apple thinks.

so basically, you can't customise your machine to best suit your needs/wants.

perhaps this is why mac "just works", they dont have to deal with any possible combination of hardware... come to think of it my XP laptop "just worked" too, seeing as all the necessary drivers were there when i got it from acer

point is: of course you dont have to manually install drivers (which usually come with the hardware) because it's a prebuilt system with no room for variation

oh, agent24, if you get the "vista basic upgrade" i beleive it doesn't come with the aero interface, but i doubt you can go back to win98

521502 2007-02-04 07:37:00 Overall it looks good, I will be putting this on my next pc which should be in about 6 months.

If you wanted or needed to do that you wouldn't be buying one in the first place. There is a certain amount of customization you can do both under the hood and hardware wise but nothing to the extent of would what you might need or want to do on a PC box, but yes that is the point, you just buy the machine, plug it in and go with what ever additional 3rd party software you might be using.

That probably is "why it just works"- from an office or job or free time productivity perspective that would be the point wouldn't it?

It is known as keeping it simple. Personally I haven't really ever felt "limited" by what I wanted to do as long as I know how to use the software do do or design what I want.

You forgot the last part of K.I.S.S...

The rest of it is just sad... very sad :(

521506 2007-02-04 09:17:00 so basically, if you want a powerful machine that you can upgrade at will buy windows, and if you want an out of the box prebuilt job you could go mac or windows as they both have the same features, just windows has higher compatibility at the cost of malware threats.

so why bother with mac at all apart from creating much needed competition with windows? and if that is all they're doing why not open themselves up like the pc? if mac is meant to be so stable and easy to use i'm sure it couldn't hurt.

seems to be purely a preference of interface for the home user, assuming they can find mac versions of all their software, which can be an issue
