728706 2008-12-17 10:06:00 Set the DNS to OpenDNS, 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220
Then you wont have issues either way ... THEN you can get on with making sure its actually getting out to the 'net

That said, you can ping 210.48.100.45 (which is pressf1.co.nz) and find out if you're online even if DNS isnt working.
I still think its related to the gateway settings ...

728707 2008-12-17 23:05:00 Ok, like this?
---
netsh interface ip set address name=Internet static 121.73.35.107 255.255.255.0 121.73.35.1
pause
netsh int ip set dns internet static 203.96.152.4 primary
netsh int ip set dns internet static 203.96.152.12 secondary
pause
netsh interface ip set dns name=Matt static 192.168.1.110 255.255.255.0
pause
exit
---
and there isnt a mask in the dns entry....just in the internet entry

728708 2008-12-17 23:10:00 You still need the Subnet Mask, but its the gateway setting that only needs to be set on the Internet interface ... Chilling_Silence (9)

That's where you have to set a route to Matt as opposed to normal web traffic going out the "internet" port.

728711 2008-12-18 18:56:00 Apologies for re-hashing a few things that have already been said, but, to summarise, would this be fair?

1) You have 2 NICs, one connected to cable modem ("INTERNET") & one connected to your brother's old router next door for LAN games ("MATT").
2) You need static IP on both NICs because Telstra needs it on INTERNET & your bro's router doesn't support it on MATT.
3) Starting with just INTERNET connected, everything is just dandy.
4) When you enable the MATT connection, it initially forgets the static IP you have assigned & starts DHCP, even though you've disabled the DHCP client service (!!). It fails to get an address via DHCP on MATT ('coz DHCP not supported/enabled on that router) & generates useless autoconfig IP (169.xxx.xxx.xxx).
5) You then manually assign IP for MATT. This enables your LAN gaming fine over MATT, but kills your access via INTERNET.

If this is correct, then I see item 4 as a problem (weird behaviour!!), but possible to overcome in the short term via a batch file or netsh script file. The problem is that your default gateway seems to get trashed by altering the MATT setup. If you're in state 5, could you give us the output of "ipconfig" and "route print" (or "netstat -r")? I think your problem may be in the default interface metric values used - hopefully - that should be simple to fix.

728712 2008-12-18 19:01:00 Yeah easy to fix #4 / the whole thing:
* Static IP both
* Dont set the gateway on Matt

The BEST solution:

1) Tell your brother the brilliant minds at PF1 solved your previously intractable internet problem.
2) Permanently disconnect INTERNET connection.
3) Set up IP & gateway on MATT so your internet works through his router.
4) Cancel TelstraClear internet subscription.
5) Profit!!!! ;) ;)

hahahaha, NO!!!
he has 3 people using his net at the mo, they have a 2mbps conn with telecom, and my nephew downloads **** all the time....and it wouldnt be fair of my to demand them to stay off the net whe i had a clan game to play....and mostly viruses.....I am never going to use their connection......and i hate telecom....lol
i play lots of games LINK (www.freewebs.com)
follow the link to find out more about why i play games
so i really need a way to have both connections.......and not have to re-enter my internet settings each time.
all i need to do is enable the MATT conn, and i loose the INTERNET settings.....i dont even have to open the MATT settings, just enabling it - wipes my net settings
