522308 2007-02-04 02:07:00 so again, if we fail to act, and it turns out we should've acted, it's much worse than acting when we didn't need to motorbyclist (188)
522309 2007-02-04 02:17:00 You're joking aren't you.
It's irony, actually - G W doesn't seem much of a beardy sandal-wearing Eco-Warrior to me but still acknowledges the Global Warming problem.

And, with respect, you call the news media "bloody hopeless" yet you began this thread by referring to a story from a Canadian national newspaper (look it up)

I'd rather do something right now about a problem that I do know is occurring than wait for some major natural event/process to (probably not) occur and solve everything

Esp: An outbreak of bird flu on a farm run by Europe's biggest turkey manufacturer Bernard Matthews is the highly pathogenic H5N1 version of the virus which can kill humans, the European Commission said on Saturday.

522312 2007-02-04 11:25:00 So in summary, we are divided between those who earnestly think global warming is occuring - and we need to act now to slow it down against the others who suspect it is all a political plot or scaremongering by the media .

I really don't know either . I do know that the sea is slowly acidifying through inorganic carbon absorption and that shellfish can't make decent shells . If they die, those creatures which eat them die and so on up the food chain to us . Bit of a worry .

How about forgetting about global warming and just concentrate on anti-pollution . Really that is what Kyoto/carbon credits etc are all about . Most people can agree that pollution is bad for us and the environment .

I'd just like to endorse Digby's population control thesis . I agree wholeheartedly and believe that human expansion both economically and in sheer numbers of people is a far greater and immediate threat than the postulated warming .

Actually, I thought that global warming is a fact that all scientists accept . It is just the cause(s) that is/are difficult to pinpoint . It seems that the earth (and now as we see, Mars) has been cycling through periods of warming and cooling since forever, but it also seems that human activity has put a large amount of "greenhouse" gases into the atmosphere .

Local pollution, and as someone has written already, the danger of over-dependence on fossil fuels and the lack of substitutes and alternatives, are probably more realistic targets .

New Zealand is in a very dangerous position in terms of fuel security . A sudden end in oil supply or a large price rise would be devastating . New Zealanders are strongly anti-nuclear, so there are no realistic substitutes or alternatives in sight . To give yourself a good fright, see the documentary Peak Oil ( . net . au/4corners/special_eds/20060710/" target="_blank">abc . net . au) . Even the US Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson appears quite frightened in it .

Yes why not. But it might interfere with profit.
In todays paper Soutland only has 1 of 8 areas for shellfish collecting thats safe.
27 sites are not safe to swim in, including the Mataura. because of all the cow poo.
Typical green NZ. Green from cow poo.

I don't think it would be a big loss to the planet if people did help themselves to become extinct.

522317 2007-02-04 23:13:00 But it might interfere with profit. There you have the real crux of the problem. Until, the problems start impacting on "short-term" profits (i.e. the current financial year), nothing of any real significance will be done, because the executives running companies have their bonuses linked only to current year performance.
