| 728666 | 2008-12-14 00:21:00 | Why does DHCP not work at his place? Are you linking the two machines directly? Basically, do this on your brothers PC: Click Start --> Run --> cmd now type: ipconfig You'll see his details, put them in to your PC, but in the IP Address box, make it +1 e.g his is 192.168.0.12 Make yours: 192.168.0.13 The Subnet and Gateway should be identical If you want to set your DNS, make them: 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 As for changing them back and forth? Thats just part of the joy of networking ... all the more reason for you to get DHCP setup at his place, keeps things easily. What router make / model does he have? IF the settings arent being saved correctly, chances are you have some form of spyware / malware. If thats the case, grab HiJackThis, run it and post the log back here. You have up-to-date antivirus? ---- Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 13:19:04 p.m., on 14/12/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16762) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\ekrn.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Browser Mouse\moffice.exe C:\WINDOWS\RTHDCPL.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliType Pro\itype.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LVCOMSX.EXE C:\Program Files\Browser Mouse\MOUSE32A.EXE C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliType Pro\dpupdchk.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\Gadwin Systems\PrintScreen\PrintScreen.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Spybot - No, his router is old and doesnt support DHCP -------------------------------------------------------------------------- how about just assigning a static IP address using the network range on your brother's LAN? Just a thought? This will stop your machine from trying to obtain an IP address regardless of whether DHCP is in use or not. Cheers, Yea, he has set static IPs at his place....he has allocated me an IP, and i have to re enter it every time i want to connect to him |

| 728672 | 2008-12-14 01:35:00 | That's basically how static IPs work, you must enter it.. You take it off and use DHCP at home, it forgets the static IP completely... Unless: Set the static IP in the Alernate configuration under your TCP/IP properties. This way if DHCP fails (coz you're at your rothers house) then it'll use your predecined IP :) |
