521639 2007-02-01 09:57:00 Seriously NOT impressed by it.. I wanted to choose:
Am not impressed
Having BIG issues
A linux user that compiles all night long

Was quite surprised at how much of a pedestal the PCW mag seemed to place it on. No home users are gonna mess with Drive Encryption, its total overkill. Perhaps businesses wanting to use it with laptops?
The UACs are a joke, so useless, they just piss me off in so many ways
People are going on about the nice GUI and everything.. "If you click once on a picture it'll show you a larger thumbnail". Well guess what, KDE has had "Hover your mouse over a Doc, Image, Folder & it'll show you a larger popout thumbnail" for the last 2+ years! Its old news!
Fancy task switchers? Old news, we have the pagers...
Bitlocker? Macs & linux also have that
A cool new looking GUI? I theme my PC for free, without using a 3rd party app like windowsblinds...
Am currently running OpenSuSE 10.2 and it comes with DVD (Data & Video) burning out-of-the-box in a Nero-lookalike app called K3b. Installation was easier than any windows install...
Not to mention the constant use of my system resources for goodness knows what?! I can quite happily get by in Linux with 256 -> 512MB Ram... Even XP runs best with 512MB... Dont even think about Vista with 512MB Ram or less (It installs on 384 - Tried it in a VM), coz its just a nightmare!

I was so hopeful, I'd convinced myself I was going to like it.. about the only good thing is how well the standard vga graphics drivers perform, and even that sucks coz I cant upgrade to the new nVidia ones with my Ti4200

32 security checks a second? Why? Does it have 32 gaping security holes it needs to keep an eye on at all times? Spyware issues? Virus worries? I dont... Heck, until a week ago, I hadnt even bothered with a firewall for 3 years, and this is only because it comes _with_ OpenSuSE and requires absolutely zero input from me :D

</rant>
Hell, even give me XP, I'd happily take it over Vista!

521640 2007-02-01 10:41:00 If you bought XP Pro you could legally install Windows 2000 Pro, Windows NT or Win98SE instead.
Can this be done with Vista if it comes on your new laptop or PC and you don't want it?

521641 2007-02-01 11:06:00 i like it. got some awesome features.

But im a gamer and attend every comp i can and at the moment Vista steals about 50FPS in a game from what my XP install offers.

anyone done that performance test ?

i get 5.3 out of a possible 5.9

521642 2007-02-01 13:43:00 I couldnt get higher than a 1.0 because it wouldnt let me update the drivers.. I tried experimental beta builds, I tried 3rd party hacked up builds, performance builds, modified builds, HEAPS... for both 64-bit AND 32-bit... neither got higher than 1.0 :( Chilling_Silence (9)
521643 2007-02-01 19:29:00 I want it, but my PC can't run it. Not surprising really, an Intel P4 Socket 478 processor, 512MB of RAM and integrated graphics. :( Bring on an upgrade! :D pcuser42 (130)
521644 2007-02-01 20:02:00 Can I be unimpressed without having installed it?
Can't afford it.
No justification to yet.
Will be sooner or later though - games.......
Not to mention the need as a tech......

521645 2007-02-01 20:37:00 I like it. I've installed it on my home pc that the whole family use and everyone loves it. I run Linux servers at work, and I'm happy with XP on my work laptop, but for home PC, Vista is good.

I was surprised at the magazine being so 100% for it though - the additional free magazine looked like editorial but sounded like advertising. What was that all about?

521647 2007-02-01 21:28:00 Have no choice, getting a new laptop this week and it has Vista already - i wonder if they will give me a free downgrade..

Of course you have a choice. Ask for XP, if they say no can do, threaten to go elsewhere.

521648 2007-02-01 21:29:00 Seem to remember an incident where a guy got arrested for doing that in a library.....

Were you fined.
