2007-02-01 07:07:00 | Afraid not, That $2800 mac on the NZ site is way under-specced. Though as you say the Apple products are now much closer to PC's in price and performance then in the past, Though this is because they are nearly identical to PC's. Correct. Unfortunatley NZ suffers price wise from being at the far end of the food chain. Apple doesn't tend to "spec" its computers the same way gamers and PC types do. They look at what the package as a whole can do and how easily it can do it. If you were to compare features of a particular Dell PC against a Mac of the same price bracket in the US you would find that the Dell would probably +/- $50 difference www.systemshootouts.org

2007-02-01 07:15:00 | Well neither would I but that is the only relevant price comparison web site I can give you. I am not exactly sure what the difference between a Dell and an HP box is apart from the badge on the outside. Dell CEO Kevin Rollins was just given the boot today for such an underwhelming performance.

2007-02-02 01:23:00 | Don't care about teen type games, my computer is a tool to get spreadsheets updated, documents written, graphics touched up, photos stored & music played and to keep in touch with friends & family. Surfing for information & fun is extra :) I can't be bothered updating & running antivirus, anti spyware et al so I own & use a Mac which is immune to windows malware. I previously used & owned MS 98 & XP SP2 running on widows boxes ~ No thanks, never again.

2007-02-02 02:35:00 | I don't find anything wrong with windows xp. It runs fine, and I don't have to do much apart from the occasional windows update, and it's running sweet. I basically ignore my antivirus program (NOD32) cause I don't even have to click ok after it updates or anything. Spyware.... meh. I run spybot and adaware like.... once a month, and it doesn't pick up much stuff. So really, to me, XP is a fairly no-hassle system. And games. Mmmm.

2007-02-02 02:54:00 | My answer is "depends" It depends on what I would use it for . First up I had better establish some credibility so Currently I have: (and yes . . this is my house, where I live with one other person . . . mock away) Primary Laptop: Vista Ultimate Secondary Laptop: XP Pro Primary Desktop: XP Pro Secondary Desktop: OSX 10 . 4 Primary Server: OSX 10 . 4 Server Secondary Servers: Various Linux Tertiary Server: Win2K Pro It all depends on task what I would choose . But as a primary desktop I would defiantly choose Vista over OSX . It responds faster, and takes less messing about to do anything more complex than downloading photos from a digital camera . Servers are interesting . . I started my now seemingly endless collection of servers with various linux flavours, but have really liked the OSX server for the majority of my SMALL network needs . At work it looks like somewhat of a childs toy compared to some of the big iron we have, but at home it does REALLY well at running all my web and file serving . I'm considering upgrading it and trashing a couple of my linux file and web servers . As for viruses, and security, I have had no infections on my machines in the last 5 years . . and the only security breach I have had was on the OSX server (although they seemed confused that they had broken into an OSX machine not a linux machine and left, and I changed the PW the next day) So . . summary . . for my primary work machine: Vista->XP->OSX->Linux For my personal servers OSX Server->Linux->Windows(anything) For work servers Win2K3 Server->Linux->OSX -Qyiet
