521000 2007-01-31 08:48:00 Hard to ignore America if you own a computer, though.

But of course, that's a different kind of war.

521001 2007-01-31 08:49:00 Or a TV.

Imagine a world with no American TV shows, Its easy if you try

521002 2007-01-31 08:51:00 Once again we are seeing socialism and ignorance being held up as morality.
9/11 was a declaration of war. America has taken the sensible option and choosen to fight the war outside of their own country. Iraq was the natural choice, a dictator that needed to be removed, logisticly accessable thru the recently liberated Kuwait, and right next to the most unstable and hostile state in the mid east- Iran. Having the worlds most advanced military machine next door would also be a wake up call for the Saudis also.Lets not forget who started this thing. America may not be perfect, but its pretty much all thats keeping you and I free at this moment in time.
The war, and we are all involved in it, is a clash of cultures, ideas, philosophies and religions. Almost all we hold dear in the west, all the freedoms we have fought so hard to attain are at risk, we have the luxury to speak our minds with no fear of reprisal, I doubt many Iranians do, or Saudis, and definatly no women in those countries dare.
Now watch some idiot argue that its really about oil...at the cost of the war, it would have been far cheaper to buy the oil.
It would be nice if there was peace, and we should all work toward that, but it takes trust, and that is in short supply these days.

521003 2007-01-31 08:55:00 Yes, it would've been cheaper to buy the oil - but that's with hindsight.

I doubt the White House realised that at the time.

521004 2007-01-31 09:01:00 America started it 50 years ago.

They also put Suddam in power and assisted him in his wars.

America maybe the "bigdog" that has kept some of the others at bay but they need to wise up to their own weaknesses real fast, They will never be allowed to settle in the Middle East. They have accomplished nothing but supplied proof they aren't as stong as they would have others believe. And turning popular opinon against themselves through foolishness.

Another couple of hotspots arise and America wouldn't have a chance, Then China can waste them and we can all eat rice.

Well, Not me, I'll die in the first wave.

521005 2007-01-31 09:01:00 I recently read a n international strategy review that stated that the west is in such a rapid decline, due to the moral, ethical and political decay, (really a fancy way to say that we are weak and becoming weaker), that the next super power will fight the muslim resurgence, and that super power is china. This report stated that if this course comes to be realised, then the world had better fear...china has no great respect for human life, and will not care who falls in its battles. I fear not for me, i fear for my children. USA or China..I know who I trust . limepile (96)
521006 2007-01-31 09:54:00 This anti-America trend pisses me off no end.

People easily forget if it wasn't for the American's we'd all be speaking Japanese and the most career-minded Aucklander could aspire to pulling a rickshaw down Queen Street.

As for Bush, maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong, but I can't think of many people with balls big enough to run a country after 9/11, and make the decisions that had to be made.

He may have made bad decsions, frankly who the hell knows unless you got prime seats in the Situation Room, but at least he had the gonads to make them.

Maybe America needs another plane into another building to stop the bloody whining.

Now...where did I leave my Happy Place! :D

Hear, Hear. I cant agree with you more. America saved a lot of people's butts in WWI and WWII and while like Metla says might not give them free reign over other countries and so on, the world would indeed be much much worse off and we would be a lot worse off. All my relatives live in the USA and while they might not support the war in Iraq, they support the idea of spreading freedom. Overall, I find Americans to be very nice people with a great outlook on life and I really do hate people slagging off the USA either due to jealousy or some other silly stupid reasons.

521007 2007-01-31 10:03:00 Here we go again.
Slagging off America?
No, slagging off a particular US government's policy.
Of course, the internal tactic, which effectively silenced the Democrats, was to claim that opposition to the Iraq invasion was un-patriotic if not treason.

521008 2007-01-31 10:15:00 Aside from the anti/pro American debate, a quibble from me about the west's "moral, ethical & political decay."

There have always been wars (Attilla the Hun ravaged far more of his world than any tyrant came near in recent centuries) and colonialism of countless varieties has murdered, enslaved & raped whole populations on most continents at some time.

Greed has made some politicians corrupt since time immemorial.
So-called civilised Britain took a long time to abolish slavery at home.

So when was this Golden Age we've deteriorated from?

I believe that the existence of organisations like the UN ( toothless though it often is) & international aid agencies show there's an overall improvement in accepted standards of what's moral & ethical..
That's possibly because we now know much more about happenings in other countries, so more people consider the rights & wrongs - as opposed to spending all day simply scrabbling to exist.

I'm speaking generally here, of course.
You can't pick & choose countries for " west's morals & ethics" - though I suspect the writer was doing just that.

(Never did like sweeping statements.
Suspect that's been guessed)

521009 2007-01-31 10:40:00 If you had been paying attention you would know the Golden Era was the hundred years leading up to the birth of Terry,And in a strange coincident It went into steep decline as he matured enough to understand a bit of the world around him.

As an adult he gave up in disgust at the decline of civilization and fled to the southern most colony.

Hail England.
