522368 2007-07-11 22:48:00 Why is it, that every time there is a flood or a tsunami, or any other type of catastrophe, it's always blamed on global warming. These things have been happening for centuries, and they are usually cyclonic, in other words every so many years.

My belief, the only reason they are more prevalent now, is it's another cycle of many bad weather storms as in the past. The world had major droughts and major weather storms before and we will continue to get more, even if we do get carbon emissions to a low level.

These things occur every decade or so, I admit we are not helping, but neither are we condemning our earth to oblivion. We could be hit by an asteroid tomorrow, we have been before, just take a look at the moon to see how many times.

As far as global warming goes, every mother and her son seems to be going on about it, as if it's the be all and end all. It's all down to money, like in a war, and there is always one somewhere in the world. The arms dealers sell machines of war, and you can bet they know, or are, relatives of someone in power, and stand to make millions out of it.

And the politicians all jump on the bandwagon, because they know that if they don't, next time there is an election they won't get in. But hey, that's only my opinion, but think about it, how do you think the Greens get into parliament all over the world? By pushing the clean green image, which really is just plain crap.

There I've had my rant for the day..........

522372 2007-07-12 03:09:00 Climate cycles are well known, with past variations locally evidenced by the retreat and advancement of the Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers, which are the lowest altitude glaciers in a temperate zone - where are they now in relation to their historical past cycles.
Man has no doubt contributed something to these cycles, but NZ'x
s and Australia's national contributions all fade to little when one takes a look at the contributions of China and to a lesser extent India.
Any savings that NZ may achieve come to nothing when compared to the major abusers - if they are not about to bite the bullet, then there is little point in NZ being the only virgin at an orgy.
However, one decent volcano can make man's contribution seem puny.
Pollution is another matter, we have been poisoning rivers and the atmosphere for years, and this has the potential to destroy both fresh water and the seas ability to support life. Damage done to forests in Europe by acid rain is all to evident.

Man-made pollution does have the potential to poison our fresh water supplies and the seas and dramatically effect the earth's ability to support the diverse species of animal and plant life that now exist.

522374 2007-07-12 04:45:00 I see Bunnings are going to start charging for there plastic shopping bags in an effort to help the environment.

It really makes me laugh.......

Why not stop using those types of plastic bags and get biodegradable bags or recyclable bags.

My one plastic bag a month is going to tip the global scale...

I think they should stop selling shoddy Chinese tools that are only going to end up in landfill. Quality tools that last will reduce landfill and reduce the number of trips those fuel hungry cargo containers make.

Greed and false economy is destroying this world and it isn't going to stop....

So therefore we might as well get used to it .

522376 2007-07-12 06:20:00 imo, you can't really argue the fact that the earth is warming, and how people still deny that human activity is atleast partly to blame is beyond me.

what concerns me more is that everyone keeps arguing: if we dont act and we didn't need to, the worst that can happen is a healthier environment, while if don't act and we DID need to we're absolutely screwed.

so by that reasoning, i don't see how lessening our dependence on LIMITED resources is of any harm - unless you happen to be an oil company

522377 2007-07-12 06:26:00 and the most shocking thing? the states, closely followed by the US are the worst polluters per person. sure china emits alot of crap (products/exports included), but there's over a billion of them.

if the likes of america and australia reduced their emissions per capita to that of china we wouldn't be in the mess we're in

and don't tell me china will get worse; they have actually begun manufacturing purely electric vehicles among other things, as their economy is growing faster than current oil supplies. so while they won't get better for a while, they aren't exactly raping the environment like western nations are (GM made a large fleet of lease only electric cars in the late 90's, after the 3 years lease expired they recovered and CRUSHED every one of them despite offers to purchase them)
