521527 2007-02-06 09:22:00 Personally I'm a big fan of putting Linux into schools, and Linux/Open Office into all Government departments.

If Macs are cheaper then comparable Windows machines for schools (and I doubt they are) then I have no issue, I consider all tax money to be stolen from me, And it should be spent wisely.

And I would imagine I will be making a contribution to my boys first car so I'm going to have a bigger say then him as to whether its a Ford or a Holden, and if he don't like it he can take the bus.

521528 2007-02-06 09:27:00 Of course they're not. Which is why Apple only has 3.6% of the computer market.

I am pleased to be included in the other 94.4% of people.
Does anyone here believe the Earth is flat?

You know better than that. Tax money is spent on overseas junkets.

Linux is cheaper than Windows and OSX.

Teach the boy to work so he can buy a car of his choice without you having to contribute. After all, the Govt needs YOUR money far more than he does.

:D

well the govt would get his boy's money anyway - it's called income tax, followed by petrol tax with gst, plus the addition of acc/school levies/more gst when registering, warranting, and insuring the vehicle

my solution? earn $10 tax-free dollars an hour under the table and buy a motorbike, that way i pay less for gas and get my money's worth out of acc:D

I oversee (on a governance basis) budgetary decisions, equipment replacement programs and forward planning for the IT development of my local College and I can assure you that Macs are not competitive at all, neither in price nor flexibility.

Kids have to be taught for a PC world (no pun intended) and the only Macs we buy are for media studies. graphics etc, though the bulk of that work is still taught and performed on PCs. We only have Macs so that students are familiar with them when they hit the workforce.

We spend your money very wisely indeed Metla! :D

It is a myth that you have to use Macs for that work anyway, I have a friend who operates a magazine publishing business and he long ago rejected Macs as too expensive and inflexible (limitations on upgrading) and runs his operation solely on PCs. As he says, and has proven, they can do anything a Mac can with equal reliability and significantly lower cost.

Contrasting that, my younger sister spent $115,000 to set up in desktop publishing many years ago (pre PC), and when that equipment became obsolete after 12-15 years, she spent around $30,000 to replace it all with a Mac setup that became obsolete in a matter of 4-5 years, in part because of the increasing demands of graphics software. At the time I told her of my publishing friend and suggested she convert to PC at around 35% of the replacement Mac & software price. Sadly she was Mac-blinded and when replacement time rolled around again, the cost of new equipment and the software was such that she simply gave up her business and sought employment in a Mac environment.

If Apple didn't adapt their arcane system to allow PC software to run they would have been confined forever to virtual obscurity in the business world.

Ever wondered why nobody has bothered to make a Mac compatible PC, or if they have, it doesn't seem to have hit the headlines?

Cheers

These days Mac vs PC will always end up Mac more costly. Who gives a stuff if Windows has a monopoly? Mac addicts. And Linux mainliners. Greg (193)
521533 2007-02-06 21:48:00 I have a pentium 4 pc and a G5 mac, I tend to find the pc spazes out when sound and movie editing.... for example...

Import a 300mb movie clip into cubase to add sound, pc will say **** you and crash. Mac will run it happly.

Of course mac sucks at games...

are they similar spec'd (ie RAM) and using same software?

a fair test would be a mac with bootcamp, or a pc with dual booting mac and win, but they don't feel the need to bother with that..

lol billy, "mac blinded", too true for so many people

i would say linux is the cheapest option, but considering all the fiddling required and resultant IT guy bill, maybe not

521535 2007-02-07 06:45:00 300mb avi file is tiny, If I capture in huffy I can be playing with 20GB segments. Metla (12)

Compromise Metla, compromise! :D

Buy him a Mazda or Toyota, then you won't have to pay for repairs as well . You won't feel so let down then either when he subsequently trades it in for a Hyundai!

However, should he later dump the the Hyuntoyozda and buy a Ford (I'm guessing you are a Ford man, my apologies in advance if I've got it wrong) you can sit back and smile smuggly, knowing that it was only ever going to be a matter of time before he saw the light and followed your advice and shining example .

Cheers
