728812 2008-12-13 20:14:00 I've bought a new LG brand DVD drive from Dick Smith. removed the old one and installed the new one.

The drive won't recognise a disc.

When I go into my computer it shows two drives; CD drive F & DVD drive L.
When I click on the L drive a message appears saying, "please insert disk into drive L."

When I click on F drive a message appears saying, "F is not accessible. This request could not be performed because of an I/O error."

Any ideas would be welcomed.

Thanks

728813 2008-12-13 20:23:00 Did you connect the IDE cable to anything else besides the dvd?? ie: A hdd?

Or is it the only IDE device, the IDE cable is connected to?

Whats the jumper on at the mo? (look on the back, MA SL, or CS)?

If its a blue IDE cable, is the blue end on the mobo connection??

Theres a red (maybe blue) line on the IDE cable. Is it going to pin 1 on the mobo and the dvd?

Does the BIOS detect it?

728814 2008-12-13 21:09:00 Thanks Speedy,

Yes it's the only drive (apart from the floppy disc drive)

Jumper pins set on ma.

The are only two connections; the IDE cable and a four pinned plug with eight wires from it. Power I presume

I looked in bios but need more info on where to look please.

I had another look in My Computer. Only the L drive is showing now. it says it can't detect the disc.

Correct the 4 pin connection is the power

Wherever it shows the Primary / secondary entries.

What about the IDE cable?? If one end is blue is it connected to the mobo, not the other way round? Likewise for the red/blue stripe. Is it going to pin 1 of the mobo / dvd?

If none of the above work, try another IDE cable. Also make sure no pins are bent on the DVD or the mobo connector

728816 2008-12-13 22:41:00 Thanks Speedy,

It was a faulty cable. I've put the orginal drive back in and it works fine so I can return my new one to Dick Smith.

However I've now got a new problem. After all this fiddling I can't get any sound out of my computer. Everything in volume control and properties looks OK. Could I have changed anything in bios that would have caused this?

Thanks

728817 2008-12-14 00:10:00 Is there a faxmodem in the case??

Open control panel / sounds, then click on the audio tab.

Whats the default device?? Click on the down arrow, at the end.

Is there more than 1 device showing here??

If there is, change it to the soundcard. If there's only 1 device here, make sure its not on mute

728818 2008-12-14 02:52:00 Thanks Speedy,

No, that all checks out fine. Everything says Sound Max digital audio. Mute's off

There's no sound either from the CD player, the music stored on the hard drive or from the turntable I have plugged into the back of the computer. I've unplugged the speakers but no sound via the computer itself.

It was working fine yesterday before I changed the CD drive.

Could I have damaged the sound card or a connection while changing the CD drive?

728820 2008-12-14 03:41:00 Is Wave in Audio Properties muted? jwil1 (65)
728821 2008-12-14 06:05:00 Thanks Guys

Line out connects to speakers. I've plugged my ipod into them to check they are working OK.

I've muted Wave in Audio Properties but it makes no difference.
