728600 2008-12-13 08:22:00 I picked up the above laptop which has some marine GPS navigation software installed. This was purchased as a backup to my normal navigation.

For those who dont know, this lappie has a screen 8X5 inches, has touchscreen and a 10 gig HDD. What it does not have is either a floppy or CD/DVD drive. It does have one USB 1.1 port. It runs Win 98 SE.

My problem is that I need to install some GPS software, plus some other bits, but it wants me to show it where the items drivers are. I can't do this as the USB connection does not work till the drivers are installed. Talk about a catch 22 situation !!

I tried to install an external USB CD/DVD, but again it wants the drivers first.

I know it must be possible, but I can't figure it out. Help please.

728601 2008-12-13 08:30:00 Have you installed all of the updates for Win 98 ?

It'll probably be too slow anyway if you do manage to get it to work. If the cd/dvd is USB 2. It may not even work at all.

Unless USB 2 is onboard

Are some of the updates here installed ? (www.usbman.com)

728602 2008-12-13 09:00:00 Thanks Speedy, but that creates another problem. Lappie uses dialup and I have BB. Will see if I can work around that.

The CD/DVD was an older one and not a 2 machine.

Thanks for the Heads UP re the 98 updates, obviously need to somehow get them into the machine.

Another thought, can anyone suggest a backup program, where I could backup important data ? I could then install either Win 2000 or XP, which would solve future problems. BUT I still need to get inside the machine and install some drivers. Am working on getting the thing online to update.

728605 2008-12-13 09:13:00 data like what?? f theyre docs just copy them somehow to something else.

You'll probably have to reinstall programs again. If you decide to reinstall windows on it

Altho, even if you reinstall XP or 2K, since it has only got USB 1.1 on it, it'll still be slow, if this cd/dvd is USB 2

Hi Drunk, Actually not a bad purchase at all. Had 37 charts within it, most from NZ but a few from Oz and the rest of the world. But as they say, never rely on electronic charts, but use tried and tested manual navigation instead. I have got what I needed from it, so it could be binned, but thought I could poke around with it till I get sick of it <grin>

A very kind offer Gary67, but a. I have several win 98 disks and b. I think one of them has the USB2 drivers on it. But the ToughBook does not come with a floppy drive nor a CD drive, therefore at this point in time, I look at it as a challenge to see what I can do with it. It works fine, I just want it to do more. However you have planted a seed - must look for a USB floppy drive. Don't think I have ever seen one, but surely they must exist! Could be worth a try.
