522147 2007-02-03 05:15:00 Hi all

One of my Ancestors died in 1879 and is buried in Matakohe and i would like to see if I can find a death notice in the paper

I remember finding some online archives with some NZ newspapers but i can't find them now

Anybody have any idea what newspapers would have been around in that area at that time

Cheers

522148 2007-02-03 05:57:00 You might be better contacting a library. They'd know and likely have copies. pctek (84)

I too have found such a site in the past, but can't remember which link led me to it.
Google gives so many options it can take ages to follow links, but I suggest the NZ Society of Genealogists home page is the best starter for what you want..

The problem is that being in Invers, i am fairly sure they don't have northland/ Auckland papers from that period

I might try that, just hoping someone else may have seen that site

522152 2007-02-03 07:05:00 Yes, I know full well it's always worth a try here - for lots of things..

A warning, though - I remember the no. of NZ newspapers who'd put old death notices online was very limited. Just those whose local genealogy groups had done it voluntarily.

Cemetery records from local bodies are also hit & miss for the same reason - though I could skite about Dunedin's, which are now wonderful.
A search with just a surname brings up all candidates back to about 1850.

522153 2007-02-03 08:07:00 Auckland Library & Auckland Museum have paper records. Won't help you tho. Sorry. I have been there & used them. Another place I tried was the "Church Records Place" across from Auckland Cathedral, can recommend that as well. Cannot remember it's proper name. PJ Poppa John (284)

Unfortunately the only place I can find that has the NZ Herald archives back that far is the Auckland Public Library and as i don't know the month of death that would be quite a Microfiche to look through

Although it does appear "Archives New Zealand, Auckland Regional Office" has a copy of his probate, any ideas as to what info that would have

522156 2007-02-03 09:17:00 IIRC The Archives NZ main website gives info on probate details.

I think the keyword is Archway.
