Sorry about the essay.

The network goes kinda like this - rough diagram.

Lounge - Linksys 4 port wireless-N ADSL router, several things connected to it through ethernet and wireless - inconsequential.

An ethernet cable runs from that to the other end of the house, that thats connected to a D-Link 4 port wireless router with a print server.

That sits in a window, and flings the wireless out to the shed, where several PCs/laptops use it to connect to the net.

Wanting to set up an ethernet network in the shed as the wifi is too slow for file/media sharing, but not have to do any goofy things like bridging a wireless/ethernet connetion on one of the PCs and sharing it.

Ideal setup would be a range extender (or a router that could receive a wireless signal) that could output that signal to an ethernet port, and then on to another switch or router. (Essentially a wireless bridge).

Will want to set up a XMBC server, use Xbox live/media sharing etc, and general media and file sharing.

Does the cheap Asus Chill recommended to Wainui do this? Or could someone recommend a good router that will?

Thanks!

729412 2008-12-15 21:08:00 If the wireless is too slow it may not be because of the signal but how many users are using it. So putting in a range extender probably won't be the fix. Unless of cause the signal strength in the shed is crap.

The wireless signal can, in theory, support 54Mb/s but you never get that.
You are lucky if you get 30Mb/s but more likely 15-20Mb/s.
You then have to share that with every other wireless user which is not going to leave a lot especially if some of them are streaming videos etc.

729413 2008-12-15 21:09:00 Sorry, I should have reitterated that the media/file sharing is going to be kept within the shed and ethernet network. wratterus (105)
729414 2008-12-15 23:42:00 Yes, definitely!

The Wireless AP's almost always get a better signal than any other device such as a laptop, partly due to having a larger antenna, partly because its not enclosed in a laptop case.

Not only will it boost the signal strength for the stuff in your garage, but it'll provide a more reliable connection between all devices in your garage and your home.
It'll also allow you to plug in cabled devices to the Asus repeater-node if they're not Wifi-capable for whatever reason.. :)

So yes, it will work, and it should work quite well. Follow my How-To in the other post for putting DD-WRT on it, I had no success at all with the stock factory firmware.
In terms of ease-of-use, get the Asus WL-520gC
If you wanna do fancy stuff like have it share an external HDD then go for the -gU model. Bear in mind its harder initially to flash the -gU, whereas the -gC is an absolutel breeze and you could quite easily do the whole thing in 10 minutes if you'd never done it before! :)
The -gC model is also cheaper by $10-20 depending on where you buy from.

An average XviD / h.264 video has a bitrate of between 700 - 1200.
Because its repeating wirelessly, you can effectively halve the speed.
In a nutshell, if you're connected at 4m/bits, you have more than enough to stream video as well as surf, make voip phone calls, game, whatever ...
You've just gotta make sure you're 4m/bit link and you'll be good as gold :)

Bear in mind that as always, it *is* still just a wireless link, and is prone to factors outside of the hardwares control affecting it .. such as trees / walls being in the way etc. Obviously the better the signal strength / speed between the routers, the better and more reliable it'll all be!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but how can I do this?

I have the WL-520gC that has the USB port/print server in the back (not sure if gU or gC) and the DD-WRT firmware on the router and would like to connect an external HD to it....

729417 2008-12-16 01:01:00 The -gU has the USB port. Its generally white
The -gC has no USB port. Its generally black

Im still writing up some doco for that myself (Am yet to try it -- Its on tomorrows To-Do list), but see here:

729418 2008-12-16 01:07:00 How much would you normally pay for one of the -gC routers? $60 or thereabouts seems pretty reasonable? wratterus (105)
729419 2008-12-16 01:09:00 Yeah thereabouts at the moment with the exchange rates and things .. They were right down at $45 for a while (Only two months ago) which was awesome! :D Chilling_Silence (9)
729420 2008-12-16 03:04:00 Thanks for that Chill.

One other thing - I have set my gU up as a repeater bridge (according to the router config), but any wireless clients will try to connect to the other router upstairs (and as a result get very poor reception).

Can I make it so I can connect to both the gU (downstairs) and the upstairs one wirelessly?

TIA :)
