729235 2008-12-15 05:31:00 For christmas, I've decided to U/G my CPU to the Q6600 GO, but I have recently changed my mind, when memphis mentioned the Xeon X3220.

Both are good for overclocking, and both have a 2.4ghz clock speed.
Which one would be better for overclocking?

The Q6600 GO is $414 while the X3220 is $438

The most important questions is, does my P5Q Pro mobo support the X3220 CPU?

If not, are there any cheap mobo's that do?
I don't really need crossfire

Merry Christmas!

LGA775 socket for Intel® Core™2 Extreme/Core™2 Quad/ Core™2 Duo/Pentium® dual-core/Celeron® dual-core /Celeron® Processors
Compatible with Intel® 05B/05A/06 processors
Supports Intel® 45nm multi-Core CPU

Personally I'd wait and get Core i7

729237 2008-12-15 22:38:00 Upgrading:
Ok if you are going to stick with a LGA 775 motherboard and you want to do a cpu upgrade then this should work as it is a socket LGA775;:)
Xeon QUAD-CORE X3220 2.4GHz 8mb Cache 1066MHz LGA775 PROCESSOR.

BUT CHECK:;)
1. Go to your motherboards makers website and see if it will take it.It may need a bios update before it will work with it.
2. See what other people are using for motherboards for that cpu on other websites.
3. Ask the retailers that sell the cpu to see what they have to say about it.

New Computer:
Now if you are going to get a new motherboard and a new cpu and ddr3 ram then think about getting a Core i7 as that is better still, but of course it will cost more for each component as they are the new toys at the moment.

729238 2008-12-16 04:17:00 The thing is....I'm a student on a tight budget so I can't afford i7

So the X3220 works with my Asus p5Q pro?

Cheers:thumbs:

729240 2008-12-16 04:51:00 Go to Asus's product page and check their CPU compatibility list. qazwsxokmijn (102)
729241 2008-12-16 04:52:00 I did my research-looked on the-nothing about Xeon CPUs, but it says it supports 45nm CPUs and teh X3220 is 45nm so...does that mean its supported?

So Confusing!

On a hardware level it should be. If the Xeon 3220 is just a very good batch of Q6600s, then your motherboard should be able to use it...but of course the problem would be in the BIOS.

729244 2008-12-16 05:04:00 I've asked 2...and they've said they'll "get back" to me soon...
They sounded unsure if you ask me.

If I do get it I'll prob get it from ascent, their excellent service will come in handy....
