2007-02-05 11:16:00 | i saw on tv1 nightline that a 14 year old rotorua boy and his mates stole a car. the police got onto them when they left a gas station without paying. to end the chase spike strips were deployed, the boy lost control and hit an oncoming van. boy died, and his mates plus the occupants of the other vehicle were injured. now the police are being rightly blamed for this, as they should've stopped the van when they set up the spikes, but it is still the dead boy's (and his friends') fault for the whole thing happening. there is now two written off vehicles and several acc claims, disruption of many peoples lives and even more taxpayer money being wasted on inquiries the worst part is that had he been caught without him crashing (which may have happened without police intervention), he would've been let off scott free anyway due to his age:groan: how could this happen? i won't even drive/ride without 3rd party insurance! /rant your thoughts?

2007-02-05 13:14:00 | Absolutely, cant agree with you more. I have always felt that in NZ, there is simply no responsibility taken or given to those who actually commit the crime. If they stole the car and then crashed it, I say they fully deserve to die before they call someone else. All the detractors of this view should think what what happen if such id****s collided with you and your family. Its amazing that if the police do their job, they get punished. If they dint chase those people, they get punished. I come from India and I;ll be honest that sometimes the police can get a brutal but we respect them and more importantly obey them. They would be getting medals etc if this had happened in Bombay for example rather than being blamed for the whole sorry mess. NZ and NZ'ers need to grow up and not have such an innocent image of the country and remembering that these aren't some sweet boys who made a simple mistake but absolute hooligans who fully got what they deserved.

2007-02-05 14:34:00 | i don't agree that the boy deserved to die . To say so is rather ignorant . And to say that his punishment of death was right for stealing a vehicle is absolutley idiotic and gutless . would you still agree that if he was still alive, and was sentance to death by hanging for JUST stealing a car/van ? I should bloody well hope not . The guy was 14, and had a crap load of years left to possibly change his life . Being happy and content that his life was cut short becuase of this is beyond me . Yeah, he may of been a hooligan like you say, trouble maker, young criminal, still no right to want to see him dead . however i do agree that the justice system would of slapped him on the wrists and let him go . i punishment worse than death would of been better . Asian style . March him down the street and tell the public what he did and let people boo and hiss at him + prison time .

And to say that his punishment of death was right for stealing a vehicle is absolutley idiotic and gutless . But no-one killed him . He chose to do that himself . First he steals the car, the robs a petrol station, then chooses to drive fast instead of stopping when the cops chased him . And injures his friends too . |

2007-02-05 20:37:00 | Death is a pretty permanent punishment - although the upside (??) of this is that he won't do it again. Maybe even his injured mates might learn from the experience - but being the cynic that I am, I have serious doubts on this score. I applaud the Police in their actions, and totally agree that the justice system would most likely not have dealt with him appropriately (from society's point of view) had he survived. Without knowing the details of the family circumstances, this is probably yet another example of a lack of parental control (although being 14, there is a limit to the amount of control that can be applied - testosterone is swirling about at that age, looking for an outlet). The parents are probably devastated, wringing their hands asking 'how can it have happened to my boy?' (and probably blaming the Police) when in fact they need to hold themselves at least partly to blame (and the Police not at all). My thoughts are with the innocent injured parties in the oncoming vehicle and also with the Police and other Emergency Service personnel who had to attend the scene - pretty traumatic, even for a professional, especially when kids are involved (even when they are the guilty party).

2007-02-05 22:18:00 | Well, rather than having him in society where he will induce more terror or being couped up in prison all for free, just waiting to be released so he can reoffend.... We all know the justice system in NZ sucks. It's not good enough to discipline prisoners, nor is it harsh enough to deter first-time offenders. I'm not saying that boy deserved to die, but in this case, it's inevitable and what's done is done - look at the bright side - he's one less thug we won't have to worry about anymore. one down, millions more to go.
