522672 2007-02-04 18:31:00 Here we go again telecom claim they are going to launch adsl2 in march but have not said where. Is this another guarantee that our speed will slow down and maybe in crease by bugger all like we have now.

522673 2007-02-04 19:25:00 I see a Tui billboard come into place. :D pcuser42 (130)
522674 2007-02-04 19:38:00 At the moment I get up to 3MBit at non-peak times (except the days they decide to change my connection rate to 2.5MBit) and around 0.6-0.8MBit at peak times out of a potential of 8MBit. Unless they increase the capacity of their network, in March I will get up to 3MBit at non-peak times (except the days they decide to change my connection rate to 2.5MBit) and around 0.6-0.8MBit at peak times out of a potential of 24MBit. Nothing much changes does it. ;) maccrazy (6741)
522675 2007-02-04 20:33:00 Telecom will launch superfast ADSL2+ broadband in New Zealand next month, nine months later than it first intended. Tom Pullar-Strecker reports.

Spokeswoman Melanie Marshall says the first ADSL2+ phone exchange will go live in March. Telecom will meet with wholesale customers this week to consult them on where and when it should roll out the technology after that.

ADSL2+ promises to let people download information from the internet up to three times faster than they can today. However, only about half of broadband subscribers are likely to benefit, as customers need to be no more than four kilometres from an ADSL2+-enabled telephone exchange to see an improvement.

Yay. Being 400m from mine I should be superspeedy.
However before getting all excited:

The Telecommunications Users Association has warned that local loop unbundling is unlikely to benefit people outside the big cities unless a way can be found to encourage more investment in the telecommunications network that links Telecom's exchanges and roadside cabinets to its trunk network.
"Suppose CallPlus decided they were going to do a foray into Ekatahuna and they got 100 broadband customers on the unbundled local loop and all of a sudden there was no exchange backhaul capacity to get that traffic to and from Masterton.

"Suppose CallPlus didn't want to invest in that and Telecom said `they are not our customers, why should we invest?', what then is the process?"

522676 2007-02-04 20:40:00 Hehe, Im just as close to the exchange, this could be great, or it could be incredibly bad :(

Does it mention _where_ the first exchange will be? Aside from the fact that the peak speed is higher, does it mention the bandwidth allocation increasing? Or are we still sharing a similarly small pipe to feed us all, regardless of the speed at which its doing it?

522677 2007-02-04 20:57:00 Ive seen purple spray paint down Main North road here in chch for many months now. It has been indicating the fibre optic cable locations to the next exchange (belfast). Only last week have a seen earthworks around this spray paint, but since a lot of the electrical wiring is underground it could just be maintenance. Ive been watching with intense interest, asking the contractors what they're doing!
Transfield told me about plans of fibre to the cabinet (in no great detail ofcourse). When that happens who knows!
Im much more interested in the fibre backhaul and when it's going to be implemented. I expect the adsl2+ provided by telecom to be a luke-warm product laced with hooks and restrictions.

522678 2007-02-04 21:20:00 so if i getting 3.2Mbps on my full speed broadband connection with adsl1,how much Mbps will i get if i got adsl2+? lance4k (4644)
522679 2007-02-04 21:34:00 probably 3.3mbps knowing telecom. Hitech (9024)
522680 2007-02-04 22:09:00 I bet if we rung telecom and asked them if they know where and when this new speed will take place i guarantee 99 percent of the time you will get (errr umm sorry sir we dont know anything about that) same answer as always. Hitech (9024)
522681 2007-02-04 22:11:00 It also pays to remember that ADSL2 can only increase the speed between your premises and the exchange - the backhaul from the exchange will be unchanged (and therefore your speed probably won't change much, it'll be just as congested), so unless a LOT of fibre gets laid in a very short space of time I can't see much improvement happening.
