| 523898 | 2007-02-15 12:43:00 | and along the lines of Metla's experience with a rearender......back a few years ago oh it was bout 96 I think I owned a very nice valiant regal V8 ...it was really tidy and ran very well and was pretty much as a friend described it a 'gentlemans car'.....very quiet and in good nick.......anyway some fool rearended me on the highway as I had slowed down considerably because of a large farm harvester machine which I'd come up on in front of me.....I braked to slow down to the approx 20kmh that this machine was doin and was about 30meters from it when I looked into the rear vision mirror and immediately spotted this moron comin up far too fast behind me .....i KNEW he couldn't possibly stop in time so instinctively I relaxed back in my seat and at the same moment my foot floored the accelerator I heard his tyres screech as he hit his brakes......I guess I managed to accelerate about one car length before he hit me, he left a 25metre skid mark. When he hit me I was accelerating away from him as hard as my car could so as to reduce the impact......this probably saved him even more damage and possible injury.........anyway THUMP ! and my car was shunted forward a little.......turned out his one was a 93 holden something.......well it was seriously munted in the front......he hit my rear bumper and tow bar square on.......HARD........silly old fool......i later checked the road and he'd had 250meters of clear visibility to see me before he hit me.......god knows what he was doing but it was certainly not paying attention to the road or his driving.......well my car suffered a couple of VERY minor dents under the bumper and a small amount of paint on my bumper from his front end..........his car ?....well it looked like some giant had grabbed the front of it and crumpled it up just like a paper bag..........guess the crumple zone worked..........it reduced the impact for him but it also reduced it for me.....and my car had virtually no damage.......certainly was driveable his got towed away ........a few days later the the insurance guy came to see me and stated 'if I had'nt owned a valiant a few years ago my self I woulnd't have belived the lack of damage'............compared to the old guys holden........anyway.......lesson.........crumple zones work well but they work even better if you are in a nice solid car which weighs twice as much as the car hitting you ............. | drcspy (146) | ||
| 523899 | 2007-02-16 12:05:00 | crumple zones work well but they work even better if you are in a nice solid car which weighs twice as much as the car hitting you ............. i'd rather not be responsible for killing anyone - what if he had been in a big 4WD, could've been a different story off-topic, but when my first starlet got rear-ended the guy had a similar distance to slow down, both cars written off, my rear wheels were locked and about a foot forward of their normal position, the front doors wouldn't close properly and it's a safe bet had anyone been in the back we would have needed an ambulance. his van was squashed up front and engine buggered, but it seemed my car took most of it. it still drove though:D unfortunately for me i was turning right on the entry to a blind left turn on the end of a straight, and couldn't move due to the oncoming traffic. so i had my brakes firmly planted when he hit to try not to be hit into traffic. the starlet had no chance of accelerating to 50kph which is what he must've been doing when he hit me. lucky for me though, i had insurance and he admitted fault :D must've been the only learner driver without insurance who would admit fault in the whole of west auckland lol |

I don't think he'd be able to convince anyone that you did a 180 handbrake turn to hit him. |

| 523901 | 2007-02-16 20:42:00 | Just thought some might be interested in my driving mishaps. I've driven for nearly 60 years now on 3 continents and only had one bump that was my fault. Fortunately not too serious. But I have been hit by at my last count, 7 other vehicles. Strangely all when I have been stationary. In some of the bumps I was off the road altogether and in one not even in the car when it got sorted. I reached the point that when stopped I would start getting nervous and even when parking try to pick an extra safe spot. Tom |

| 523902 | 2007-02-17 01:33:00 | The problem is when it turns to custard and a 4WD is involved in an accident (be it caused by the driver or other events), it causes more damage to other parties, be it smaller vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists etc, especially if it has bull bars. The interesting point is that if 2 4WD's crash, the injuries are more severe than if 2 normal passenger cars collide. Think about that. The minister of transport would ban bull bars tomorrow if he could. Roll on that day. OK. I do not have a BullBar on my RAV4. We might think about a CAR which mounted the footpath very recently and we now have a three year old in a serious condition. People may think about driving on the left. Not on the footpath though. I love this word BAN. It just keeps going on. Ban smoking as this kills people. Ban all vehicles as they kill people. Ban trees as they fall over and kill people. Ban any religion as we get these holy wars (Jihad). Ban politics altogether because some people lie. Ban horse riding as people fall off. Ban people having a voice as well. In which case I suggest you get off your tail end and live elsewhere. Sorry, but I am a little tired of some people pushing their own barrow. |

| 523903 | 2007-02-17 02:12:00 | So, we ban 4wd's for being better built then cars, Then we can ban cars for causing more damage when colliding with a motorbike, then we ban motorbikes because they can hurt pedistians, then we ban people from the streets, wrap them in candy floss and store them in giant padded rooms, safely away from harm. | Metla (12) | ||

I don't think he'd be able to convince anyone that you did a 180 handbrake turn to hit him. when my brother had his motorcycle written off the stupid girl who caused it tried to blame him for it. she was 14, unlicenced and had no-one else in her parents 4WD (covered in scrapes and bumps too). she did a u turn right infront of him, thankfully he got he just forward of the pillars so just 'harmlessly' sailed over the bonnet (which was car roof height, hit a van/4wd anywhere else and you'll end up inside it). anyway, despite the skid marks in the middle of the road and huge dent in her front right quarter panel, she still insisted that he had hit her while she was parked! obviously after two visits to small claims in which we won both, we never got any money for the bike. all she got was a fine for dangerous driving (and forbidden from sitting a licence test for 6 months, which doesn't help anyone). stupid ***** |
