| 522452 | 2007-03-11 15:17:00 | young fella I know went to DSE to get soem ram and took in his puter so they could install it, the system blue screened when it was fired up at the shop so the MORON who was doin the install told him this was because of the partitioned hard drive which was setup to dual boot win98 and xp......of course the youngster didn't know any better so came home without the ram.......I soon put him right lol.......now, the moron at DSE who gave out this totally incorrect info should NOT have been playing in that pc at all cause they obviously had NO CLUES whatsoever........ I told youngster that quite often ram will conflict with other ram and that this is most likely what happened and that 'tech' shoulda simply tried a different brand........it certainly is true that you can boot a puter and run it off a cd, linux for example without even a harddrive installed........what kind of idiotic manager would have someone who had that little knowledge playing around with customers puters.....?.......not me if I was in that position for sure ..... |

| 522453 | 2007-03-11 20:22:00 | Umm ... I'm of the opinion that its not the sellers at fault here but the naive PC buying public. Most people buy a PC on price, they understand very little about the features. Take the 256MB of ram thats sold in a lot of PCs (yep the cheap and cheerful ones) yes it will run windows XP home fine, if thats all it is running, once you add AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, office suit and the rest of the stuff non techie users tends to load the whole thing comes grinding to a halt. Not true. My desktop has only 256MB of RAM - mainly because its very old and has just simply been updated with more 'stuff'' when I can manage it. It runs XP prof. everything quoted above and also some CAD programs. I have just treated it to an internal DVD burner (yesterday and no undue problems). It is quite amazingly fast and in fact my other later computer with 512MB takes twice as long to do anything so tends to be used as backup or storage. Memory isn't everything. Tom |

Oh dear. I remember in my young days there was some proverb often quoted about "The pot calling the kettle black!" (I quote 3 lines above - with 3 mistakes!). I can forgive computer technicians making mistakes. After 12 years messing about with computers I am still appallingly ignorant about them and have lots I could learn. But I am always saddened when some writers show a terrible ignorance of basic English. Not really their fault (notice I spell 'their' not 'there'). As an ex teacher I watched standards fall, while I was still teaching. We constantly had to drop some parts of the syllabus as it was too difficult for the poor dears. Now we have NZ Standards Association. The sooner we get rid of them the better. Plus the replacement for the school certificate. What an out and out mess. No wonder boys are loosing interest in further studying. I feel sorry for potential employers. At one time they knew E stood for fail and had done so for years. Now it stand for Excellent. But try to pick up the outstanding student for the difficult career choice and its impossible. Please drcspy do not call people MORONS. Do try to improve your English - it is a wonderful language and knowledge is very gratifying. Tom |

| 522457 | 2007-03-11 21:42:00 | do not call people MORONS In this situation I believe the cap fits well and truly. As for my english abilities you have no idea of my skills but just to fill you in a little; I'm 47 years old I have read THOUSANDS of books, so many indeed that I"ve lost count many years ago. I was top of my classes in English all through my schooling and I *almost* got a book published by David Bateman Ltd a few years ago. I have a very nice letter from them stating that it was exceptionally well written etc. I am always saddened when some writers show a terrible ignorance of basic English Actually I am in no way ignorant of basic English, in fact I'm considerably better at stringing words together than most. However at 3.30am in the morning on the internet I just cant be bothered with using 'correct' english. My theory is simple: If you understand what I'm getting at then that's good enough. So dont try to take me to task for my abilities or apparent lack of them. |

| 522458 | 2007-03-11 21:45:00 | I can forgive computer technicians making mistakes So can I however you better realise that that 'mistake' was a ridiculous one to the extent that I don't believe you could honestly label that person any kind of 'technician'... |

| 522459 | 2007-03-11 21:46:00 | No one who is a technician - a REAL one anyway - would try to tell you that the system blue screened because of the partitioned, dual boot hard drive. That's not just a mistake it's totally illogical. | drcspy (146) | ||
| 522460 | 2007-03-12 00:18:00 | It would indeed be illogical for Dick Smith to put their technicians (assuming they have any) on counter duties. Their counter staff are apparently taken on from those who dropped out of parking warden school. | R2x1 (4628) | ||

So dont try to take me to task for my abilities or apparent lack of them . Shame on you . You obviously know better than I gave you credit for . But persist in spelling mistakes . I can only judge you on what you produce . Just as I once failed an engineering exam in probably my best subject . I was judged not on what I was capable of but on what I actually did . I passed it the following year with flying colours . I still dislike seeing people called Morons or idiots . I did teach mathematics for some years to poor low level students . Often their results appalled me . But they never got called rude names . It is their behaviour which is often questionable - not their personality . However I do admire your persistence in working at 3:30am - the days when I could do that are now over . Do keep it up - so many youngsters these days dislike working at 3:00pm . There will always be people prepared to put in the extra effort and long hours . Then they get criticised!! I hope you try again with the book and it gets published . If so I will claim some credit for helping you! Tom |
