729666 2008-12-17 05:50:00 Tick ALL of the services you unticked in msconfig (like I said you SHOULDN'T use Msconfig to disable services)

Its probably not working because it needs one of the services, that you've disabled

If you want to disable any service, use services instead

729667 2008-12-17 07:43:00 Logical disk manager properties (local computer), should be on automatic

Logical disk manager admin service properties, should be on manual

Remember to tick both in msconfig, if theyre still unticked

I checked Admin Tools / Services and found that the local computer Logical Disk Manager was not on Automatic. Now done.

Usually I never check the Services section of msconfig (only the Startup section). Checking it now, I see a few things running that I don't want, such as Lavasoft (Adaware).

Or it probably wont run.. If you uninstall it, it'll probably disappear

Hi Speedy

I ticked all the blank boxes in MSConfig except Logical Disc Manager and rebooted. The computer started up fine so I went to Services in admin tools and confirmed they were flagged as "started" which they were. I went back to MS Config and ticked LDM and again the computer started fine. However, when I went to LDM in Services it was still flagged as disabled so I set it to Automatic and tried to force a start under Actions- the 1053 error message appeared again. I disabled LDM, rebooted and went back to MSConfig only to find that LDM had disappeared from the list (LDM Administrative Service was still there. I rolled back to the Restore npoint I had created before this particular bit of fiddling and in MSConfig all the blank boxes came back but still no LDM in the list, though it is still in the Admin Tools/Services list.

Do you think LDM itself has become corrupted?

729670 2008-12-18 03:56:00 Thats a possibility. It can get corrupted

I'll have to have a look around and see what can be done

729671 2008-12-18 04:39:00 Thanks Speedy tuiruru (12277)
729672 2008-12-18 04:41:00 Try start/run, type cmd

Then type sfc / scannow, chuck the xp cd in

Other than that, update to SP3. See if that fixes it
