| 523666 | 2007-02-08 09:59:00 | If teenagers are going to act like morons, then guess what? They'll be called morons. And when their moronic behaviour adversely impacts on other people, then they have to be treated like the morons they are. Best treatment? A bloody good whack or two. | Greg (193) | ||
| 523667 | 2007-02-08 10:03:00 | I've mentioned this before. It is a medical fact that the brain does not fully mature until about 25 for males (not sure what age for females). This results in the person not always being able to fully comprehend (or even see) the consequences of their actions just because their brain hasn't finished its development. It is certainly no excuse for some of the sheer stupidity that goes on, but it explains why it occurs. | 523669 | 2007-02-08 10:25:00 | Actually, Jonathan, I agree with you. Edit: Forgot to say - my older generation disapproved just as much as today's... It's been happening forever. I expect you will one day. It was one of the very much older generation Greek people, (Socrates, Plato or whomever) Aristotle? Who despaired of the younger generation way back then. Who rolled a tyre down Abel Smith Street in Wellington when HE was younger? Was not ME. It was my Dad. Who threw stones through windows of the Okuia school in Wanganui when HE was younger? Now that WAS me. |

It is certainly no excuse for some of the sheer stupidity that goes on, but it explains why it occurs. It's described as prefrontal cortex development - it doesn't impede intelligent thought, but as you say, perception of consequence of actions is often impaired or distorted. In males it can be seen up to 25 years of age. In females a couple of years less. Alcohol and drugs can exacerbate or replicate the affect. |

| 523671 | 2007-02-08 11:01:00 | It just depends how afraid you are of the consequences of your actions whether or not you carry it out, not how old you are once you are over about five years old, and your sex doesn't matter either. Don't give me that modern P.C. B.S. A stricter upbringing is what is required. Being made to suffer consequences that mean real pain and anguish to the perpetrator quickly brings them to their senses. I knew heaps of bad boys (juvenile delinquents) in my time and they were all afraid of the cane (6 of the best) and curtailed their worst behaviour if they knew there was any risk of being caught. My last headmaster was the heavyweight boxing champion of Southern Rhodesia, I got 3 of the best from him for having my hair too long on the day I was to go back to Zambia for holidays (flower power and hippy days) to see my girlfriend (who incidentally was a Kiwi from Auckland). LOL. |

This may still be true today for all I know. In New Zealand there have been 11 murders this year so far. Last year there were 64 people murdered for the whole year. When I officially became a teenager at 13 in 1955 three or four murders in a year would be maximum. Also we need to put population figures in to come up with real figures. Back in 1955 we only had about one quarter of our current population. Please note that is only my perception. If any here see warning signs like cruelty to animals at an early age I suggest you try to do something about that. |

| 523673 | 2007-02-08 11:10:00 | The females just buy into all of Society's B.S. earlier than boys, generally speaking, and why, because they have more to gain by playing the game, sorry. | zqwerty (97) | ||
| 523674 | 2007-02-08 11:15:00 | Ah, Good old teenage wasteland. Such incredible fun. So incredibly stupid. So much madness, confusion, chaos and good times for all. Social gatherings were pure energy, Music meant something and none of us could afford a full tank of petrol. Best years of my life, glad they are over, Couldn't handle them again. Oh yeah, I pretty much agree with Laura, Though I have forgotten what she said and cant be bothered scrolling to have another look. But we males have an excuse. We have rageing hormones in teenage years. At age 50 some females take hormone replacement pills. Although I think that has gone out of fashion now. |

Sometimes things happen in life that force us to mature a little faster than the rest. Im definitely not going to say im mature, but I have no problem saying that I can understand circumstances damn well, and judge my actions fairly. Teenagers slip up! I think what defines a more mature teen is the ability to evaluate, grow up and make wise decisions that are good for the future. I'm babbling, i'll stop now :P |
