2008-12-16 23:00:00 | Hi Speedy Before you last post (cue bugle call) I went Control Panel > admin tools > services, found Logical Disk Manager . which was flagged as Disabled Log on Column said Local System. Right clicked on it, went to Properties, and under the General tab set the Start Up Type to Automatic. Then went to Action on the Menu and clicked on Start. About half way thru the progress bar slowed right down and I eventually got the error message: Could not start the Logical Disk Manager service on Local Computer Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion Back in the main window of Management Console Service the status column was hung on starting In response to your post I checked that Logical disk manager admin service properties was on manual and ticked the box against LDM in MS Config and restarted. MS config showed the Start Pending message and logiing off just hung again, so for the moment Ive disabled LDM I think I really do need to get this sorted cos at the moment Properties for C drive in My Computer is reporting 13 gigs of free space and I know that before this started I only had about 6-8 gigs free and I havent got rid of that much More help greatly appreciated!!

2008-12-17 01:08:00 | Hi Speedy Sorry to be such a doofus but how do I confirm that net framework is installed?

2008-12-17 01:10:00 | If its installed, Microsoft .Net framework 1.1 will be in add/remove programs. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-12-17 01:34:00 | Hi Speedy .net Framework 1.1 is there as is 2.0 Sp2, 3.0 sp2 and 3.5 SP1 (although that last one seems a lot smaller than the other 2. Shall I go ahead with the install of SP! for 1.1?

2008-12-17 01:37:00 | Yup no harm in installing 1.1 SP1. Reboot after, see how it goes | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-12-17 03:11:00 | Sorry Speedy - No luck SP 1 downloaded and installed. Same thing happens - when LDM starts it stalls. Trying to force a start in "Services" just produces that 1053 error message again. Any other ideas?

2008-12-17 03:35:00 | Hmm what firewall if any is installed?? Firewalls by the looks of it, can block Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. If this is blocked, the error youre seeing will appear

2008-12-17 04:35:00 | Nope, I've not installed a firewall and the Windows one and I must have disabled in the past 'cos if I go to look at it in Win Security Center I get the message: "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?" file:///C:/WINDOWS/TEMP/moz-screenshot.jpgfile:///C:/WINDOWS/TEMP/moz-screenshot-1.jpg

2008-12-17 04:42:00 | What "other" services have you disabled?? It sounds like you've disabled a few, thats why nothing works Are any services still unticked in msconfig? Was Windows antispy beta installed on this PC at all?? Coz it looks like the error you saw about ICS will appear If you want get teamviewer and I can check it out from here remotely Hmm winsockfix may fix that firewall prob. Something maybe screwed or corrupted on your system / your registry
