523139 2007-02-06 23:19:00 I'd go with Canon S3IS for the following benefits:

* Flip 'n' Twist LCD - it's a handy feature when you want to hold your hand up to do a top shot or taking a photo in low position.

* Ultrasonic Zoom
* Stereo microphone
* Allows you to take photos during movie
* Antishake in both photo and movie mode

And I HATE Sony MS sticks Duo :D

523140 2007-02-07 01:19:00 I have a Canon S3IS, had it for about 9months, and I generally like it. Use the movie mode quite a bit too!

The only area where it falls down for me, if one is picky, is a bit of purple fringing caused by the lens, but it is a 12x zoom, so we can't expect perfection, I guess. Uses standard AA batteries - that's good.

There is a good article about it on www.luminous-landscape.com That will help you decide, I reckon.

Thanks Rumpty,

What is the longest you've recorded a movie for, and how have the batteries performed in this respect? Does the resolution (640 x 480) stack up when viewed on a tv screen? And is the stereo sound as good as it's made out to be?

The review on Luminous Landscape is interesting, if a little disturbing. The reviewer's comments about needing a silently operating camera, shooting from floor-level, and having a discreet barrel make him sound like he's picking a camera for a stalker! :horrified :D

523142 2007-02-07 05:00:00 The longest movie you can make at 640 x 480 is about 8mins, or a fraction less, on a high speed 1GB card. No problem with the batteries, they will last for many movies. (that's rechargeable NiMh, of course, they are extra) I have never viewed the output on a TV screen, but when I showed a small movie clip (on the computer) to a friend who is used to results from a camcorder, he made no comment about the quality, so it must be ok. I usually scale the clips to the standard 720 x 540, using VirtualDub, if I am putting a movie together.

Stereo sound is good, considering where the mics are. Wind noise can be a problem.
