| 522422 | 2007-02-04 07:12:00 | harvey norman are idiots. and the people who sell stuff their are trained to be idiots. They're not idiots, they're just a large chain store selling household items. As opposed to being a real PC shop. So they just get bulk whatevers delivered and on sell them to the idiots that buy them. |

They are trained to judge people on what they look like in relation to how much money they have to spend. ive been in store MANY times when customers have argued with the staff becuase they know nothing about what they sell. at one point, the palmy store hired a couple guys who use to work at Tony Tyres service and knew nothing about computers. One staff member was telling me that he used to work at HP's tech centre. and blatently lied to me about how they got next to no calls about technical issues with HP PC's in order to get me to buy one. Worse than car salesman |

| 522426 | 2007-02-04 19:11:00 | Had a 'computer guy' in HN tell me how Mac's couldn't do this & that, basically he didn't have a clue. This little grey haired gran just quietly set the desktop to change every 5 seconds and watched the fun from the other side of the shop....:) | Sue (33) | ||
| 522427 | 2007-02-04 21:45:00 | 100% agreed which is why Dell is struggling so much (OK, I know a lot of people on this forum don't hold Dell in any sort of regard but they are a major PC seller) I wonder about this. I read so very often that Dell products are rubbish but I have never seen any real factual assessment of the things. Surely they cannot be as bad as some people make out. The old saying springs to mind about "fooling some of the people some .....etc" Are there any reports anywhere about them (no I haven't tried Google - perhaps I should) Tom |

Reviewers don't review entire machines usually unless it something out of the ordinary. They review parts. What you will see if you Google is complaints about Dells customer Service. And parts: With a Dell you are buying a mystery box - it may have quality brand parts in it or more likely it won't, it will have cheap crap parts. Whats inside is more important than the case or any label stuck to the outside of the case. And then there is their 1 year warranty. When parts manufacturers offer up to 5 years on their components. |

| 522430 | 2007-02-06 05:38:00 | What are you expecting to see? Reviewers don't review entire machines usually unless it something out of the ordinary . They review parts . What you will see if you Google is complaints about Dells customer Service . And parts: With a Dell you are buying a mystery box - it may have quality brand parts in it or more likely it won't, it will have cheap crap parts . Whats inside is more important than the case or any label stuck to the outside of the case . And then there is their 1 year warranty . When parts manufacturers offer up to 5 years on their components . and then you have the systems themselves apparently "gaming" systems run fine on 512MB ram and integrated graphics they reckon 256MB will run xp with antivirus etc they never tell you the cpu speed out loud, just "pentium 4 processor 534 with ht technology", and will advertise one good thing on each machine, as all the other specs are crap . and if something like a powersupply dies you have to buy their special parts, putting upgrading out of the question too . might as well buy a mac |

| 522431 | 2007-02-06 08:01:00 | I wonder about this . I read so very often that Dell products are rubbish but I have never seen any real factual assessment of the things . The old saying springs to mind about "fooling some of the people some . . . . . etc" Are there any reports anywhere about them (no I haven't tried Google - perhaps I should) Tom I personally don't think that Dell products are that bad (or should I say consumer products) . I found this on a pcmag . com site: Dell is an interesting case . For the first time in ten yearsand 1995 was an anomalythe world's largest PC manufacturer does not receive a Readers' Choice award for desktops . Its overall score is merely average . But if you look closer, you'll notice that on just home machines, Dell's score is better than average . And so is its score on work machines . Yes, that's a little confusing . After all, if you put home and work together, you get the overall score . The trouble is that Dell sells a higher percentage of work machines than other leading vendors do . This circumstance drags down the overall score, since work machines tend to have lower rating on satisfaction than home PCs . Dell remains a decent option, though there are better alternatives in each category . Some of Dell's individual ratings are quite poor . The biggest problem involves quality control . True, Dell's score for units needing repair has improved from 23 percent to 18, but this is still significantly worse than average . Even among first-year systems, 14 percent needed repairs . That's worse than the first-year rate of every other desktop company for which we have enough data . Scoring Communication Skills Tech support is also an issue . Dell's 6 . 4 score is worse than average . Following in Apple's footsteps, Dell had recently switched to a warranty that provides only 90 days of free software support . This situation didn't last long, and the company switched back . The failed experiment may have affected Dell's tech support scorebut maybe not . Over the past year, roughly 78 percent of technical support calls were covered by warranty . That's not as good as the numbers for some vendors, but it's better than HP and Sony .
