729728 2008-12-16 11:00:00 Hey,

My subscription to Norton 360 just expired, and I'm not sure I want to pay for it again..

Does anyone know of a good free anti virus program for Vista, or is it better to fork out for Norton?

Thanks,

Mike

729729 2008-12-16 11:09:00 NEVER GET ANYTHING NORTON

Now, get something like AVG or Avast!

They are antivirus only and are not all in one suites like Norton 360.

So, you will also need to Anti Spyware programs, 2 of the following:

Spybot S&D
Spyware Terminator
SUPER Anti Spyware

BTW for Avast! you need to get a free registration code before the 60 days period

729730 2008-12-16 11:15:00 Are you in NZ, and do you have Telecom/Xtra as your ISP?
If so, they have a free download and updates of McAfee Security Suite (not a fan personally, but it's very cheap!).

Sorry, but McAfee isn't much better than norton, and its at least as heavey, if not more. I've had many PCs ive remove the horrid software from and installed NOD32 or Avast.

NOD32 is a very very good AV software, if you can afford $70 a year highly recommended.

Otherwise Avast is the pick out of the free ones.

729733 2008-12-16 20:06:00 i agree with wainuitech, NOD32 is very good. for what you pay for it you get a very good and reliable AV GameJunkie (72)
729734 2008-12-16 20:27:00 Commodo is also free. the 64bit version is beta but works. pctek (84)

I do have Xtra as my ISP but of course running a 64 bit version of Vista.
Your link above will only run on 32 bit O/S.

Avast works for me.

If I was going to pay then NOD32 would be my first choice.

729736 2008-12-16 21:01:00 Been using Avast on Vista for well over a year. Updates almost daily, and low resource usage compared to the new AVG (though on most machines that's not an issue, my aunties P3 was a different story).

Runs fine with Vista SP2 beta too.

I like the Comodo combo idea, as I use the firewall already. But I won't use it until it shows up on the list of virus scanners that VirusTotal.com use.

Cheers.

You'll be waiting a long time then. If you want to use the latest version of Comodo, just install the firewall, not the AV.

The AV is still pretty new / and probably still in beta. There's not much in it, to detect anything
