729231 2008-12-15 05:16:00 Hi Guys
A question Please
I live in a 2 story House, Downstairs I have my Computer room it is my Den, I have my Broadband connection there, The Modem is connected to a Router that feeds the Computer as well as a Computer upstairs. What I want to do is Buy a Laptop to use seperately upstairs. I intend to Buy a Wireless Router and plug the feed from the Computer upstairs into it and that then will plug into the Computer Upstairs. The Laptop I Buy will have Wireless built into it, ( on Sale Toshiba $1499 at DS with extras included ) Now the question is will this work? I feel I wouldnt get a good Internet Connection if I put the New Wireless Router downstairs. So in effect, I have my Broadband Modem and Cable Router downstairs and upstairs I will have the wireless router for the Laptop. I presume that the Wireless Router also comes with a Cable Connection, or Maybe I will have to purchace a wireless objest to plug into the Computer and make it wireless instead of Cable.
Thanks for any advice

729232 2008-12-15 05:24:00 It should work, and if your house isn't too big you should get reasonably good speeds.
What you could do is get a router(linksys is good) then buy the Asus WL520 GU/GC and set it up as a repeater, we can post instructions her. You will get excellent speeds anywhere in the house if you decide to do so.

You can also ditch the router you currently have as a new W/L router will have a LAN ports inbuilt.

Or, if you want, you can get a cheap wireless card/USB dongle for your upstairs computer if you want everything to be wireless.

Thanks Blam6
it sounds like the cheapest way to do it then is Just buy a Wirelesscard or a Dongle Do you think these may give me less speed over my Networks or will this Computer suffer in any performance. Thanks for the Input..Cheers

729234 2008-12-16 10:12:00 I would keep the cable connections you already have as they are faster and more reliable . You were on the right track in your original post . Get a wireless router (WL-520gc or gu are good for it) and put it upstairs . This router must be configured as an AP as you don't want two cascaded NAT routers in the setup .

Plug the feed cable from downstairs into a LAN port (NOT WAN) in the wireless router (now an AP) and cable the upstairs comp into another LAN port . The AP can then feed the laptop wirelessly .

Good luck!
