| 730109 | 2008-12-17 08:14:00 | Sigh..........loads and loads of the same endless thing prompts this post. 1) Make sure you have loads of RAM. Regardless of what you will do with your PC, if it came with the minimum, go buy some more. XP = 512mb, Vista = 2GB. Its cheap. 2) If you want to let the kids play games, make sure you buy somethig GAMING capable in the first place, this means at least a decent separate graphics card. Integrated graphics will not do. Motherboards with no graphics slot are not useful. 3)Do maintenance. Its not a toaster, it needs cleaning out now and then. This means physically so all the dust balls don't clog its workings. Don't park it next to the coal fire either, they don't run well jammed with coal dust and huge fluff bunnies. Run anti-malware apps on a regular basis, this is around twice a week, not twice a year. Prevention is better than cure. Far too many Sad little 192Mb, jammed full HDDs stuffed with mp3s, porn, keygens, games that won't run and stacks of malware which someone decided to fix by installing another version of windows over the top of the existing one makes for a painful repair process. I've had 3 in one day............. The latest with masses of illegal everything states its owned by a "born-again christian". Thou shalt not steal? |

| 730110 | 2008-12-17 08:20:00 | Good ole users eh, I just spent an hour digging fluff out of a HSF and trying to find a replacement fan as the old one was seized near solid and wouldn't spin without giving it a flick with your finger. Apparently been like that for a while, case side was permanently off. grrr | kersonan (13264) | ||

| 730113 | 2008-12-17 09:05:00 | I also like pro ignorant, the re-install windows (any flavor) and not any drivers at all crowd provide a constant source of fun :) On those days when i need a reminder of my support days I like to read the nzherald comments whenever Xtra goes down, there's just something about the comments like "Xtra made my machine take 10mins to boot" that makes me smile. |

| 730114 | 2008-12-17 20:31:00 | Awhh Well keeps us all in business - Yes but there are the sensible ones who agree to have it fixed properly then there are the ones that want minimum cheap as dirt quick repairs. Like todays - first username stuffed full of malware, cleaned eventually (speed of a damaged snail), 2nd username even worse, didn't help that he has installed games in the Desktop folder. Directly in the desktop folder. And his "Goodies" folder is probably the cause of the massive malware infection considering whats in it. Also in that folder was pdfs of his completed SIT Computing course. mmmmm. Meanwhile another username yet to scan and the first one has just thrown a spaz over the profile - corrupted. So to repair that now too. And she wanted minimum fixing......................sigh.............. Naturally I'll be expected to do all this for $40. |

| 730115 | 2008-12-17 20:45:00 | For $40 I would run ccleaner, update windows and give it back, tell them it will cost more if they want it fixed properly. | Rob99 (151) | ||
| 730116 | 2008-12-17 21:14:00 | For $40 I would run ccleaner, update windows and give it back, tell them it will cost more if they want it fixed properly . thats getting close to it  I Think we all have had those kinds before - I usually ring them and tell them the cost to FIX IT CORRECTLY - not a simple patch job - and advice that if its not fixed right, it will come back and Bite them within a day or so and be right back where they are now (or worse) most agree to fix it correctly . But the ones that dont - I ALWAYS put on the invoice , and point this out to them, and get them to sign my copy of the invoice that they have read it, words to the effect " As directed by Mr/Mrs/Miss <Customer name> this PC has not been repaired to a completely clean state before leaving <insert your company name> Full repair was not permitted and further infections may occur at any time . <Insert date> That way if they come back and complain that you never did the job correctly in the first place - you say I did advice you and show them the original invoice . |

Normally we just tell the customer, havn't had any issue yet but it's only a matter of time. |

Excellent. I do put on there Recommendations and details of that. Exactly what problems it has, quotes for correcting them and detailed info on what was exactly done. But sometimes you get one that thinks miracles are possible. The Christian lady rang and has agreed to a real fix, the illegal WIndows problem (don't know about the other suspect bits) was done by the famous Clive Wilson in Gore in June. She has the recovery CDs too, so who knows whay they'd put another version on it? Never mind, it will be fixed properly so all good. |
