524648 2007-02-14 09:38:00 Since ihug was purchased by vodafone, I have noticed that they have had one disaster after another. The most recent one is today, when 500 odd websites hosted by ihug have been hacked and defaced.

iHugs resolution to this is for the website owners to reupload them, as it doesn't appear that iHug have made any backups.

So there is no confusing here, its isn’t ihug web servers that got effected it was a US web server run by internet provider Quik(which ihug bought last year) which was effected.

They are still ihug hosted websites, as Quik has been taken over by ihug. Who owns the servers and where they are located is irrelevent, as the buck stops with ihug. ihug are the ones who their customers are paying for the service so have to take full responsibilty for the problems. I just wonder why they haven't made any backups.

If you read most web host terms & conditions you will find that most if not all web hosts say in there terms & conditions that the user is reasonable for keeping backups of there sites.

Oh so its all Ihugs fault some hacker hacked various websites.
Must be your ISPs fault when you get malware then too huh.

I can't believe a website owner who paid lots of money for a site wouldn't have a backup of their own. What do they do when they want to make changes?

Stupid.

I am sure that most would have a backup with their developer, however to get it uploaded back onto ihugs servers will cost the owner.

If i was an ihug customer I would want to know why the hacker got access, and whether they had been keeping their servers upto date with security patches. As most websites that were affected appear to be static websites, I don't think they would have got accesss from a unsecured website script.

I am sure'most' would have such a clause, however for a professional company to not make their own backups is very odd. When iSERVE was hacked last year, they managed to get all their websites restored again from their backups with a few days.

They should have kept copies themselves.
Its no different from any other data - owners responsibility to BACKUP.
