2007-02-21 03:23:00 | I consider a Vodem to be the Windows ME of wireless broadband. It's very buggy, but some people don't care. :p I consider Dell and Hp to me the ladas of the computer industry, but some people just don't get it. On the vodem note, I enquired about it for my boss that lives in otihanga up the kapiti coast, outside the bb area by 100 meters, but no 3g coverage. Didn't realise you could have it in non 3g areas

I would recommend however to anyone who has a Vodem, to download the full Vodem Connect software from the Vodafone site. I didn't like the Vodem Connect Lite software that is on the Vodem itself, it never worked that well for me and I thought it was rather basic. The full version is much more stable and you can SMS from your PC using it, which suits me as I can type much faster than txting on a cell phone  |

2007-02-21 05:20:00 | Is this a viable alternative to getting a fixed line and broadband?IMO no, The price is a lot higher than wired BB for the same data cap and wired BB is a lot faster, BUT if you had to (for some unknown reason) get a phone line installed or phone lines upgraded to get BB (which would cost a fair bit) it might well be a viable option... I consider a Vodem to be the Windows ME of wireless broadband. It's very buggy, but some people don't care. :p And you know this how? have you had any personal experience with one?

2007-02-21 05:40:00 | Is this a viable alternative to getting a fixed line and broadband? Yes, maybe, if you are living in an area where you can connect to Vodafone's 3G or the even faster 3G Broadband service. I believe the 3G Broadband connection is capable of 3.4 Mbps although 1.4 Mbps is more likely in practice. I can only get a GPRS connection here which is supposed to be 236.8 Kbps but I haven't been able to get more than about 6.2 Kbps for a sustained download which is hardly broadband speed :) I'm paying $49.95 a month for a datacap of 1Gb.

2007-02-21 07:36:00 | Hi, anyone used/own one of these? (www.vodafone.co.nz) I have a friend who is looking to go tiki-tour in a bus and wants to keep connected. The beauty of the device is he can use it with his desktop at home and laptop on tour. If you have any experiences, your opinions would be gratefully rec'd. Greg They are probably ok if you can afford to run it. Dosen't Voda$one charge 1 cent per kb for traffic, which is $10 per mb for normal datausage. If you go on a plan it is a lot cheaper (from memory $50 per 1 GB), but you get locked into a contract, and if they lower their prices you are likely to get stuck in the contract paying more.

2007-02-21 11:42:00 | I have been using one for around 4 1/2 months and find they are generally satisfactory in all sorts of odd places. It pays to choose your supplier though, I dealt with a firm not known as "Second Stationary" in Birkenhead. All attempts to have the unit checked were unavailing, in fact the assistant displayed a level of product knowledge that would not overpower a retarded snail. This was handily exceeded by her assurance that intermittent faults were not covered by warranty, and were "scientifically unlikely". I now have a new unit, purchased elsewhere, and the difference is a bit chalk and cheese. I am tempted to return the original Vodem to them in a manner that will not obstruct the sunshine. Vodafone are good, but avoid cowboy retailers like the one in Highbury Mall, Birkenhead.
