730748 2008-12-18 21:55:00 Hi everyone.

I have been running a newly built pc and it has been running fine since 24 Jul 2008. No problems at all. Until this morning. I walk away for ten minutes and it is turned itself off.

So I turn it on and it beeps at me 4 times and passes BIOS fine then says

Computer was shutdown due to cpu overheating.

It still can boot into windows after that message showed up I press Ok to continue.

But it seems unusual and would like to ask online before I did anything more.

I am not overclocking. My cpu is a Intel Core Duo 3.0ghz only has stock fan.

It has three hard drives connected. 2x500gig and 1xTb. all SATA.

4gig of RAM 2x2gig sticks DD2

gxf card Asus EN8600GT MAGIC/HTDP/512M Video Card, GeForce 8600 GT, 512MB, DDR2, PCIe-16, TV out, DVI, HDTV, SLI ready

PSU is 430watts.

I also monitor using core temp software. Idle's at 36C. When playing games gets up to about 55C max and I only rarely use my pc for games.

If anyone else has had this message before let me know or any advise would be good.

Thanks.

730749 2008-12-18 22:14:00 I would start by checking the CPU heatsink under the fan and making sure that it is not clogged up with dust. CYaBro (73)
730750 2008-12-19 00:34:00 On the face of it, the cpu doesn't look to be in strife going by your temp measurements . I wouldn't take the error msge as absolute gospel . Not saying it isn't a cpu problem but do other tests as well .

Re-seat RAM and vid card and test RAM . Is vid card fan OK? Also see whether problem goes away with the case side off .

Good luck!

730751 2008-12-19 07:08:00 Thanks for the help guys. After taking off the fan of the cpu and adjusting a bit the temp is back to 36C. The heat sink must of not been close enough to the cpu. Nico54 (10960)

I don't quite believe that's the case, but good to see it's working.

Your CPU shouldn't be getting those errors until well into the 70C range. Perhaps higher.
