730236 2008-12-17 17:35:00 Power supply started whining yesterday, medium pitch when under load. Low pitch when nothing plugged into it. Not the fan as it does it when not running.

Can this be fixed, or is it always a sign that the transition is near?

If not, no matter, I can get myself a more efficient one. Kinda sucks its only 18 months old but.

Cheers.

730237 2008-12-17 17:38:00 Sounds like it might be on the way out , you can get some good ones for a reasonable price try a Silverstone from ascent gary67 (56)
730238 2008-12-17 21:01:00 If it's not the fan then it's probably a transistor or something going. It will probably eventually need replacing. Bussani (14313)

x2

Start looking now, you don't want a transistor or capacitor to blow up in it, potentially could take the rest of the PC with it.

730240 2008-12-17 21:33:00 As I figured. Yeah I'm gonna replace it today so I don't have to listen to it.

Thanks.

730241 2008-12-18 08:34:00 Power transistors are straight go/no go devices, there's no half measures, so it is probably a failing filter cap and what you are hearing is either the switching transformer or an output choke complaining about the unfiltered current.

Replace it NOW. If it fails at switch on or when in use, it may well cause collateral damage. :crying

Cheers
