528048 2007-02-25 08:24:00 Just saw that 'tasteful' ACC advert again on the box. Call me cynical, but what's the point of it unless they are softening us up for another bump in premiums (For those of you not self employed- it's only a month to the end of the financial year as well), good timing  Shortcircuit (1666)

Haven't seen the advert yet but my brother-in-law probably needs a raise as well.

528050 2007-02-25 18:55:00 Yes, when big corps put on touchy feely ads it usually means they are going to be sold, or sell some shares.

But we already own ACC ! I think it is scandulous for them to be spending our money they say they are short of on tv ads.

You may be right !

528051 2007-02-25 20:04:00 Of course there a GOV monopoly and they can and will put up their rates. Helen made sure that there was no competition as soon as she got in power in 1999.. paulw (1826)
528052 2007-02-25 21:05:00 Takes me back to a few quotes by Robert Heinlein:

"There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him." - Robert A. Heinlein

"Democracy is four wolves and a sheep voting on dinner." - Robert A. Heinlein

"Taxes are not levied for the benefit of the taxed." - Robert A. Heinlein, The Notebooks of Lazarus Long

"There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch." - Robert A. Heinlein, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress [This one is also known as "tanstaafl"]

The first and third one (above) are possibly the most relevant here

ACC levies are a form of taxation - and as a self-employed IT contractor, I strongly object to being stung for an employer levy as well as an employee levy every year!! OK, my income fluctuates a bit from year to year (mostly upwards ;) ) but every year they seem to increase rate at which the levies are charged (certainly my invoice from them seems much higher every year, irrespective of my income)- can't remember when I last made an ACC claim!! Especially anywhere near the tune of what I pay every year!!! It's not just the dollars, it's the paperwork and having to remember every damn year to allow for ACC.

The trouble with a No Fault system is that no-one learns from their mistakes or takes responsibility for their own behaviour, so everyone pays more every year because the cost of claims are higher every year. I would far prefer having compulsory insurance through a private provider (which was starting to happen a few years ago when Helen put and end to it). Being able to find the cheapest provider based on my own claims history (like most other insurances) is a far fairer system.

Of course, you could do what one of my associates does each year (not that I am condoning this) - he doesn't pay until he gets a letter from Baycorp, then sends a cheque for the full amount. So he gets uses of his own money and no bad record at Baycorp...

He quoted the entire post in order to highlight the relevant sentence without taking it out of context.

QFT stands for Quoted for truth.
