527805 2007-02-24 23:46:00 Hi, any telecommunications people here that can tell me the meaning for the following values....I only get 2.8 mb download and wonder if any of the value dictate my speed, and what I can do to increase.

Now I have my telephone cable of 5m going inder the house to the office for the router connection, yet tried a short one up at the telephone jack with no real differance between the figures

527806 2007-02-25 00:08:00 Um, I'm sorry but ONLY 2.8 MB?!?!? I would easily murder someone to be able to get that sort of speed. God, Woosh makes Go Large the best plan on Earth. And I know a lot of people on this forum also have similar trouble of different ISP's to get anywhere close to that speed. Congratulations btw :D beeswax34 (63)
527807 2007-02-25 01:12:00 If I was on Go Large, I wouldnt mind so much, but this in the Pro plan and costs $80 p/mth. SolMiester (139)
527808 2007-02-25 02:52:00 Exactly. Complaining about 2.8, geez.

Line Attenuation.

Line attention is in relation to the "loop loss" on your line.
The further you are away from the exchange the higher your attenuation figure will be as the signal loss increases.
The lower your attenuation figure the more chance you have of getting the faster speeds.

SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio).

The SNR margin can only be measured from your own property and therefore to be measured correctly may need an engineer visit to check this figure from the BT test socket behind your master phone socket. Your SNR Margin can fluctuate on a day to day basis and may vary depending upon local equipment, conditions and interference.
An upgrade in speed often causes the SNR to decrease by up to 5 dB. The higher your SNR figure then the better your line quality and therefore a higher chance of getting faster speeds.
It is very important to note that SNR plays much more importance in maxdsl than it did on the traditional adsl product.

And heres mine:
SNR Margin 15 / 29
Line Attenuation 3 / 0

I average 600k.

527809 2007-02-25 06:55:00 Solmeister was asking for the meaning of the figures reported by his router, I don't see any specific complaint as such until the word was brought in subsequently, it seems to me to be a valid query .

I dont get anywhere near all that reporting with my Dynalink router, but it is getting a few years old now :)

I'll try and make some comments as best I can from a standpoint of semi-ignorance, as I don't understand all those parameters .

The SNR at 14dB seems pretty good to me and shouldn't be the cause of any degradation in speed .

The line attenuation figures both down and up suggest distance from the exchange or roadside cabinet is around 3 . 6km .

Under ideal conditions the max ADSL speed should be around 5000kbps
it wont be more than that and with real conditions I'd have thought 3500kbps-4500kbps .

. internode . on . net/adsl2/graph/index . htm" target="_blank">www . internode . on . net

The router reports 2400kbps .

(I would like to know what Sols "2 . 8Mb means exactly, is it from a local speed test, or a file download or what? )

Now one possible explanation is that the DSLAM could well be a Conklin 'mini-DSLAM' which according to one source account for 20% of ADSL lines .

. internetnz . net . nz/pdfs/pubs/plans-ar/2005-06-InternetNZ-UBS-Cross-Submission-Knossos-Report . pdf" target="_blank">www . internetnz . net . nz

(See section 49 . )

These mini-DSLAMS limit speed to 2Mbps .

I'd be inclined to contact Telecom and find out whether a Conklin does indeed supply the ADSL connection, if not then try and get Telecom to do a line check .

527810 2007-02-25 09:46:00 Hi Terry, thanks for the reply.....The 2400 - 2900 value is about the top speed.
I found the hidden pages of my router which displays all the info above.

I have had to setup a couple of new pc's lately around the area, and noticed they both got the max speed down.

I have a pro plan so really would like a bit more.....

527811 2007-02-25 18:54:00 The internode site seems to be down at the moment, this is the graph showing ADSL speed versus distance from exchange:
www.imagef1.net.nz

As the router is reporting a lower downstream speed than would be expected, then a query to Telecom certainly would be in order.

527812 2007-02-25 19:44:00 Solmeister was asking for the meaning of the figures reported by his router, I don't see any specific complaint

He says - I only get 2.8.

527813 2007-02-25 22:24:00 He says - I only get 2.8.

Thats a complaint? jeez

Oh, and buy the way, I could give a toss what everyone else gets, thats for you to deal with.

I am paying top dollar for a service, and I'm going to make sure a get all I can for it.

I am looking for advise/help, not comparable rates!

527814 2007-02-26 03:52:00 Now I have my telephone cable of 5m going inder the house to the office for the router connection, yet tried a short one up at the telephone jack with no real differance between the figuresWhat's your house wiring, 2 wire or 3 wire? (remove a phone socket to see) .

Two wire gives best results, and to optimise your end of the deal you really need to have a quality splitter at the point of entry and a Cat5e or similar quality cable from the splitter to a dedicated adsl outlet .

Until you optimise signal delivery from your interface with the Telecom line you will never know which way to point the finger, and Telecom will always have an out . If you are using a flexible extension it may slow things down too, though I note you saw no difference with a short connection lead . Even so, a decent trial period might have shown up a difference .

Cheers
