| 527115 | 2007-02-22 07:31:00 | I am on the lookout for a new car. Previously I have had european cars, but I am sick of their unreliability. I have had a fiat, a VW, and my lastest is a Peugeot. THe Peugeot is only 6 years old but has had heaps of problems with its electronics. When we first got it, it had electrical problems, which the dealler fixed and told us that they had hooked up the radio wrongly and it was feeding into the cars main computer wrongly which was causing the problems. Since we have had it the electrical probelms have got steadily worse, to such a point that today the car is now dead and won't start and has to go to an auto electrician. This is a car that has only done 80000 km and only 5 years old. We don't know if the current electrical problems were caused by the dealers earlier mistake, but they are sure to deny it and it would be impossible to prove, although we do have written correspondance indicating their error. Anyway I am wanting to now replace it with a new reliable car. I was thinking japanese, as Toyotas and Mazdas have got a good reputation for reliability, and I also own a small mazda for the kids. However my other requirement is that it needs to be a diesel engine. It appears that the NZ importers don't import diesels into NZ. ANyone know if their are any Japaese diesel powered cars. I don't want a Ute, and also want to avoid SUVs, it really needs to be a saloon styled car. Thanks for any recommendations. |

I steer well away from Euro cars that are out of warranty. Anyways, there is a Mazda 6 diesel, and I hear it is a good 'un. However, it is only the wagon and not the sedan. The rest seem to be 4wds and commercials. There is a Hyundai Elantra (?) here is Australia that is diesel. It seems to be getting rave reviews as well. |

Thanks, I think the Jap sedans around that are diesel tend to be Jap imports rather than new cars. Diesel engines tend to have more torque and more than their petrol equivalents. Also the new ones are cheaper to service and are supposedly more environmentally friendly than petrol. You can also go a lot further on a litre of diesel than you can on a litre of petrol. This is one of the reasons parliament are going to diesel vehicles. There are pros and cons for both, but diesel is that way I want to go. |

| 527120 | 2007-02-22 08:32:00 | Why do you want a Diesel? If you are looking for a family car, the Honda accord is a good option - comfortable, safe, reliable & affordable. No need to buy new - get a second hand one in good condition much cheaper & it will still last almost as long as a new car. |

They are also more fuel efficient than the Toyota Hybrid. Hondas are what old people drive. Go to the UK and almost all the hondas on the road are drive by the grey power. |

| 527123 | 2007-02-22 17:38:00 | Peugeot diesels are pretty robust, but in Peugeot-land they believe that electricity is an evil spirit and wire the vehicles accordingly . Korean stuff isn't all that good . . and in US standards, don't hold up to driving long distances very well . . . or very long . Broken Kia cams are a real trouble . . and that's just to start . But . . . BROKEN CAMES are not even a happenstance in other engines . . why do the Kias have this problem? Also, check out the timing belt replacement intervals . . they're pretty short here in the US . . . . some every 20,000 miles or about 1/3rd the normal time lapse for other engines . Stick with Japanese stuff . . although I find any Japanese vehicle that starts with the letter "M" is very expensive to repair parts-wise when it does happen! A BARO sensor for a Mazda costs $300 . 00+ US for a device that connection-for-connection and in physical and electrical design is absolutely the same part as for a new Cadillac which costs $40 . 00 US! That's just the charge differential for changing the logo on the box! |
