526000 2007-02-19 22:53:00 I'm off to Holland and Singapore for a holiday. I'm not quite sure what to do with my mobiles, because I have been told they might not work.

I have two, and 021 and an 027. I have had a look around telcom and vodafone websites, but don't really have a clue what i'm looking for.

I just want to be able to send/recieve txts from NZ and from Holland/Singapore while I am away.

Can someone enlighten me on what to do?

Thanks

526001 2007-02-19 23:00:00 Ok, looks like it's called Global Roaming for Vodafone. From what I understand, all I need to do is dial 777 and add Global Roaming to my account before leaving NZ.

Correct?

526002 2007-02-19 23:19:00 If its prepay you may need to sign a form in a store and pay $10 for that. (VODA).
Check prices as can be expensive and you will pay even when person calls you as they need to bounce the call to you from NZ.

Another way is use sms only and block out all calls. Get them to do this.
Or get prepay simcards there if you use a lot.
EU should be fine on any dual or tri band phones.
When you get there, if you cannot get a auto connection, use manual network search.

526003 2007-02-19 23:23:00 When you call back you may need to dial a intl code such as +64-9 ... then the number for auckland +64-21 for a 021 cellphone. My 6230 didn't do it auto, while my old 5110 did fine, maybe it was the place of network as well as the phone. Nomad (952)
526004 2007-02-19 23:41:00 On my recent trip to Europe (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Czech republic) I used a borrowed (from my niece) Vodaphone handset and bought a pre-paid T-Mobile SIM in Frankfurt.

Phone (Nokia) found the network(s) fine.

Worked pretty well for voice, but delivery of texts to and from NZ (both networks) was relatively unreliable - some got through, some disappeared.

Pre-paid SIMs are readily available in Europe along with recharge cards...

If you go the "Roaming" route (from Vodaphone NZ), and use it for voice, be prepared for some horrendous charges.

And Nomad is corect about people calling you from NZ.

526005 2007-02-20 01:24:00 The main thing I'm concerned about is texting within holland/singapore. I don't need to text back to NZ, don't need to call anyone.

Yes, it is prepay. I don't think I will be texting much, just for if I get lost and such

Sounds like roaming is the way to go. Or Pre-paid SIM's. I might have a look into that as well.

Thanks :)

Can't you even go for a holiday without your mobile phone?
And two of them.

Funny, but I can go away for a holiday and the world doesn't stop spinning because I can't be contacted.

Thanks :)If you're only going to be texting locally, then a Pre-paid (Dutch/Singaporean respectively) SIM card is defintely the way to go.

526008 2007-02-20 02:58:00 Leave the 027 at home.

My wife and I have used our Vodafone mobiles in various countries in Asia and Europe (Oz also). Prepay SIM cards are easily purchased and often the salesperson will install the card and set it up for you (language can be a problem setting up on a new network). It helps to ask several locals or the shop assistant which is the best mobile company to go with.

Be aware that in some countries, with some mobile companies, you will not be able to do international texting. Also ask if you can receive and make international voice calls.

526009 2007-02-20 03:02:00 And be sure to hit the tech shopping heaven in Singapore. Its a huge mall with around 6 levels of electronics. Its called Sim Lak Square or something similar to that name. Someone here will know the exact name. Strommer (42)
