526397 2007-03-16 08:48:00 Sorry,by large I meant thousand,would that be about right 2k?

I personally consider 2 grand to be a nice target budget for a new PC, Though 3 grand is even better.

If we do a quick tally up of pricespy we will get an idea of the very cheapest such a rig would cost, Though it would require a fair bit of shopping around and building. Not for everyone, and certainly not recommended for everyone.(build your own is perhaps the most stupid and unhelpful advice I ever see when people ask about a new system, Its fine for someone who approaches it as a hobby or is starved for cash but bolluks for near everyone else)

Random advice, when purchasing parts to build a PC, try to keep purchases to no more then a couple of outlets, Its far less hassle then dealing when 10 different shops (and 10 different knobs)

anyway.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 $300
Asus P5L-1394 $150
7600GT $185
1GB DDR2-800 $125 ( I presume this is the right gear, no research done)
320GB Seagate Harddrive $140
DVD Writer $50
Case approx $140

There we go, $1090 dollars for a box full of killer hardware.

Must make the mac feinds weep.

Of course you will now need software, KB/Mouse, Speakers, and a monitor, and the Pricespy prices are most probally bogus.

As for that list of components - it's more or less what I'll be after fairly soon. Thanks for doing the research on our behalf.

Stay away from motherboards with the 945P chipset, nothing wrong with it but its old and naff and theres some many better options.

526401 2007-03-21 11:46:00 Ok, so I am looking at something along these lines. All I need now is a motherboard to go with it all.

Cooler Master iGreen Power 600W - $219.85
AMD ATHLON64 X2 4200 65W - $183.50
2x A-Data DDR2-800 1GB - $284.51
Sparkle 7900GS Cool-Pipe, 256MB - $324.96
Asus DRW-1814BLT SATA DVD Writer - $87.58

Total - $1,100.40

I've looked at a heap of reviews but everytime I find one I like the look of, I can't buy it here in NZ, and I can't even find an aus retailer who will ship it here!!!

I don't want anything too expensive, and I couldn't give a **** about SLI.

I was originally looking at the asus m2n-e (non-sli) board. It was pretty much everything I was looking for. Reasonably cheap, but reliable and had all the features I wanted - but it's ben discontinued.

So I looked at the SLI version of the same (www.c1com.co.nz), but i've read that it's passive cooling solution is a bit lightweight (i've had issues with overheating chipsets before, so don't want to go down that road again).

So I found this one, the foxconn N570SM2AA (www.vtechindustries.com.au) which I like the look of - especially with two ide channels, I won't have to buy the SATA dvd drive i've listed above. But no NZ retailer for this.

So, can anyone suggest something else. I'd prefer the nforce 500 series chipset, and minimum of 1 ide channel (pref 2), SLI is optional, and no on board video.

Hmmm....Im looking at one on a suppliers pricelist right now..., Was thinking of getting one myself and dropping a single core 3800 in her, saving hundreds of dollars which would be better spent on the Asus 7900GS Im eyeing up, Which looks like it would be cheaper then the Sparkle 7900GS you lookin at.

526403 2007-03-22 00:07:00 What supplier is that? I've got hold of a few so far, and everyone says it's discontinued. craig.b (6571)

I would like to build a decent PC that will last me a few years. I do a little design type stuff with photoshop/illustrator/freehand and use my computer to listen to all my music, general surfing type stuff, but I like to have a lot of apps open at the same time.

I'll be building it myself, I've built a couple of computers in the past but kinda lost touch with the pc world in the last year or so.

I can't spend any more (preferrably less but I'd rather do it right the first time round) but I pretty much wanted to know if there are any major flaws with the system I've chosen?

Cheers,

-Glen

Make sure that all the software you want to use is vista compatible (and that the version you have is vista compatible - some companies released a new version of their product that you have to buy if you want to run it on Vista)
