| 731669 | 2008-12-25 07:00:00 | A troublesome and unresponsive computer is a pain in the butt, period. I am pleased to say that all the problems I was having with my computer have been resolved, all thanks to Speedy Gonzales who gave up 4 hours of his time to fix up a screwed registry bought about by my having done the following things I list here in case it can be of help to another individual. When I was either installing a new program or downloading from the Internet and being made aware that C drive has become Low on disk space, in order to create 'temporary space' in C drive I moved the VM Ware Browser Appliance to another partition intending to put it back later; forgot about that and some? time later I 'Deleted' it from its temporary home. All this happened at least 6 months ago and wasn't causing a problem- until two weeks ago when the VMWare Player began to show up on screen attempting to install programs or suchlike whatever I was doing at that time, in competition with other virtual drives popping up and Free Download Manager. VMWare Player couldn't complete/ get started on what it was attempting, making a reference to a missing - necessary path and would disappear off-screen 5 seconds later. Free Download Manager presented itself on-screen and I downloaded/installed it. Handy item especially if one is using Dial-up Internet connection and the mandatory 'disconnect' after 4 hours of dial-up kicks in when your d-load is at 99.9% complete. Pain in the butt especially if the d-load had taken 3 hours and 59 seconds to get to the 99.9% completed stage. Sigh.... Didn't need FDM as I had Firefox Flashgot & uTorrent 1.8 FDM was loaded to run when computer opened up, I would exit it from the sytem tray and it, along with the now emerging VMWare Player, would open attempting to grab anything I was asking default magnet uTorrent to do. As said, VMWare Player was w flash in the pan: FDM I clicked to not d-load. FDM, if I gave it the go-ahead, got the hump and eventually would start to d-load but would quickly turn to a 'Stopped' state. Cool. LogMeIn::Downloaded it and Tirminal early this year with a view to transfer large files ( up to 5GB) between the UK and NZ. Absurd idea, UK half had Broadband and I was on a 4-5kb/s d-up...: ) Both Terminal & LogMeIn I either Uninstalled using Add/Remove Programs, or Delated them in a similar fashion as done with VMWare Browser Appliance. Whatever, there was no apparrant problem showing in computer 'til recently. Only thing I did notice 2-3 months back showed in Device Manager; LogMeIn showed as being attached to Primary Hard Drive as a driver, highlighted by a yellow triangle with the ! inside it. Eventually I right clicked/uninstalled it. Thought that was the end of it until it, and Terminal et all began to emerge and wreck havoc. In retrospect, after their installation, I recall having read up on both the two FTP programs LogMeIn & Tirminal ;LogMeIn in particular was branded as being spyware and ws difficult to remove. It certainly was and for that matter still persists to hang on after Speedy laboriously removed its roots in the com's registry: because its popped up again today. Opened com, opened Firefox and there on screen is a Login and Password page from LogMeIn! Never seen it before.Checked Firefox's History and there are 3 visits to the site late last night. I never went there, but the pages show as being : addacomputer3.asp, computers.asp & LogMeIn-Remote Access and Desktop Control; the latter is the 'login/password' page. Twigged the page references as being those that came up last night when I went to email an innocuous .jpg Gimp Image to a lady friend. Right clicked image > chose 'send to mail recipient' a windows installer popped up on screen, then some alien to me Windows Office Email page ( Office Outlook) came on screen asking me to enter her email address, did that but it wasn't recognised by windows(probably because its a xxxxx@yahoo.com.au address). From there I was sent to other windows to set up a connection, addacomputer was one of the options, tried them all and still didn't send the .jpg. Gave up on that one and sent it using yahoo mail. That's where the 3 entries re: LogMeIn show up in FFox History. Got me beat but for now, I'm not worrying about it. Uninstalled, as advised to do by Speedy, all instances of SQL Server 2005 with a view to reinstalling them. Haven't reinstalled them and as I'm not running a Server, I don't think I'll bother. For now. There you have it, what was meant to be a quick 'what to & not to do' summary has turned into an Epic; I hope that I've not acquired my flatmates irksome habit of relating a 5 second daily occurrence into watching a film adaptation of Dostoyevsky's "War and Peace", frame by frame. Thanks to everyone to helped sort out my com woes. ciao gza |

| 731670 | 2008-12-25 07:32:00 | Well at least its not crashing as much as it was before Sounds like the Logmein popup/s isnt / arent too bad... Should be easy to fix |

| 731671 | 2008-12-25 23:18:00 | Yep, Speedy, its not crashing at all. The LogMeIn popup I mentioned is easy to fix as are all the other embedded problems / errors that I'll quickly list here and possibly how they came to be. I have mentioned throughout the 2-3 Threads things that I have done using the computer in past 14 months and back-tracking through them I come to the conclusion that the System is corrupted and that complete wipe-out, format / fresh install is necessary. After your having the quick look through to see if you can find the cause of the LogMeIn appearance I mentioned and looking through other system folders, you couldn't really see anything else than a fresh start being the best cure. Ditto. LogMeIn: While I lived in Oamaru NZ from nov 2007 > easter 2008 and had the woman with who I boarded, iHug / signin details loaded to my computer, I d-loaded / installed LogMeIn, Tirminal, IncrediMail, VMWare Sandbox and Windows IE7. IncrediMail delivered to my MSN Messenger 124 emails meant for her. IE7 when I open it today comes up " Blank Page-iHug Internet", ( used to be KOL the ISP I used). The .jpg I tried to send to her using Outlook Express that didn't recognise her yahoo addy and the diversion to the "set up account" page showed her as ******@ihug.co.nz ( just tried to repeat the send failure and the thing went!! you probably sorted that out when you were checking com last night) The appearance of the LogMeIN signing page I mentioned, I believe is embedded as a part of the IE7 infrastructure. All bought about through my using her ISP details. I could uninstall / re-download and install IE7 now I'm using present ISP to attempt rectification, but there are other out of place / unusual mysteries: uninstalled programs that aren't removing themselves from " Start > All Programs menu, leaving their folders behind in " C > Programs" and in the Registry. MS Office Pro 2007 Trial: still shows in "Add / Remove Programs" even though I uninstalled it, doesn't have a 'Remove' option so in there, replete with its own updates, the non-existent exists. MS Office Enterprise 2007: installed, updated all good. No...tried to uninstall it to reinstall from disc, message "Installation is corrupted. Try installing again from disc or other storage device". Ok, load disc to DVD Drive, install over the top of the one that's in there, go back > try to uninstall it > get the same "can't do" message. That'll do, eh. Backed up system drive to slave HDD using "Acronis True Image Home 2009 ( Fully working 15 day trial version)". Don't really want to use it to stick a cancer back into a good lung, or where-ever. But it'll suffice for Docs / pictures etc. Backed up all drivers to slave drive. The partition I have with music will have to stay in place for now, until saturday, I'll go- get the 500GB external HDD i mentioned. No good my getting an internal slave HDD, this com's blown 2 new ones in quick time: S.M.A.R.T failure. I think caused by insufficient ventilation, the slave sitting atop the master drive in the drive bay...kapow. I have the side off the box and both drives on the table. ( All fans etc are clear of dust build-up & regularly I blow clean the mobo etc with compressed air canisters) Correction:::Tolstoy is author of " War and Peace". Dostoyevsky wrote " Crime and Punishment". Well, it would seem that like Raskalnikof, I've done the crime and now I gotta do the time. Here goes manana dela manana. gza |
