731364 2008-12-21 07:06:00 Yes the laptop has a VGA port, and the screen works fine.

Ok an update:
The CPU slipped off the fan .. so I installed it back on.

First up without the CPU fan it gets into Windows XP.

When I install the CPU fan back on .. it again goes silent. Black blank screen, no beeps at all. Repeatedly it many times .. it is consistent.

Now it is either a bad CPU or a bad PSU? I don't have another PC so I don't have another PSU to use. The PSU is a cheap one since he just use it for simple stuff, it is a iCute 180W bundled with the iCute case. I would of presume the PSU should be fine because it has worked before and load shouldn't be an issue. All it has now is 1x wifi PCI card, 1x floppy, 1x DVDRW, 1x motherboard with builtin video and 1x CPU. 1x HDD.

731365 2008-12-21 07:12:00 I would definitely change the PSU anyway. Lucky its running at all Speedy Gonzales (78)

There is no way that the CPU could slip off the fan. I have seen a PC which after being handled by a courier the fan and heatsink were no longer attached.
The CPU is normally under the fan and is in a socket which in your case is a 754 socket so you say.

731367 2008-12-21 07:53:00 Get a PSU from the local recycle centre then just to rule it out should cost no more than $5, you would be surprised what you can pick up in the way of older stuff that works. gary67 (56)

There again make sure the PSU suits the motherboard in the way of power connectors.

731369 2008-12-21 09:06:00 The PSU now is working .. so it's gonna be hard to tell what is the culprit. He may as well upgrade the PSU to a Antec or Enermax brand anyway....

The thing is, with the CPU fan attached before it didn't work. I then dettached the cards and drives and it still not work until I removed the CPU fan. So is power load an issue, I dunno.

So I thought maybe a bad cpu or a bad motherboard.

With the CPU fan. When he installed it, he didn't buy thermal paste. He just used the AMD CPU and the AMD enclosed CPU fan which had a self adhesive side to it .. so he just used that. I reinserted the CPU stuck with the fan .. doing a guestimate with the pin alignment ... and after a while securing the latches (on the fan) and taking it off and redoing ... the CPU remained connected and the CPU fan lifted off .... separated.

731370 2008-12-21 09:12:00 I wouldnt guess which way you put a CPU on a mobo

It'll only go one way. If you try another way and try and force it in, you'll bend the pins

You can usually tell, which way it goes, because there's a triangle on the mobo and the CPU.

731371 2008-12-21 09:28:00 Yeah .. I put it via the correct way .. there is a corner marking :D

After going all smoothly .. the above post was done on his PC :p

Then .. I put in the TV card - the last thing. Then it chose not to work again. I dettached the CPU fan and still not work. Hmm... then I dettached the HDD assuming it's a lack of power issue .. and still no go. Took out the TV card too and still no go.

Being the end of the w'end I put the stuff back into place and save it for next time. I dunno, maybe it goes now and then. The most obvious thing is the PSU so will pick that up after the year when we get back.

It may be you should not have used your guestimate as to alignment.

In he event you started this PC without a heatsink and fan then I would think that the CPU not work again. EVER!

I also think that you may not know the difference.

I have to be rather pleased that you are not working on my computer.
