526327 2007-02-20 19:43:00 Who uses floppy drives these days? :P

Me. I built my last machine without one. Then it turned to custard at some stage and I was unable to do what I wanted to do without a floppy drive (can't remember exactly what though - too much bourbon between then & now :D ) so I chucked a floppy in and now wouldn't go without one. I could do something else with the extra $13 I would save by not having one I suppose.

steer clear of intel, intel processors are weak and very bad for gaming....

Maybe native knows something that negates all the information I have read about the Intel Core 2 Duo's. His advice seems to contradict everything I have read and heard.

526328 2007-02-20 19:49:00 I DO!!!!

Just out on interest Jack, what do you use the floppy for still. I keep mine for yonks going from PC to PC and then I had to use it once and it was dead. It could have been dead for years, I realised, because it was a security blanket I hadn't used for a long time. Why use a 1.44MB floppy when you can use a 1GB USB stick?

I'm still running along on an AMD 64 3000+ and I am happy with that. But if I was to build a new system for myself tomorrow I would go Core 2 Duo. Bang for buck.

526331 2007-02-20 20:52:00 Yup, all I would get is something like a core 2 duo mobo and CPU and some ram for it.

Thats it, and chuck this 19' lcd on it. Might need another vidcard if the mobo doesn't have AGP on it.

Neither of the PC's here have floppies in them at the mo, so wont miss having a floppy. Haven't had a floppy for the last 2-3 years.

I use a Sandisk Cruzer U3 1 GB. Which is only used to flash the BIOS. And u can put programs on it, without installing anything on the PC itself.

Pretty easy to make it bootable if u have XP. Or something else.

All u need is something like this (h18000.www1.hp.com)

Get some bootdisk from bootdisk (www.bootdisk.com) extract the files in the zip file, run the HP tool. Select the option so it creates a bootable disk, point it to the folder/s, file u extracted. Voila the Sandisk is bootable

Use this case, and burner.

Firstly I don't have a usb stick. Not exactly sure what it is even.
Floppy gets used for minor tasks like running memtest, bios flashes, and for storeing stupid passwords and user names. And I still have Word 6 on floppy.(even if I haven't used it for years. But I MIGHT)

526333 2007-02-20 23:57:00 x 2 cpu's are adirty word with me. Nothing but trouble.

I'll stick to my 4000+ thank you.

But I must admit I don't know what I'll upgrade to.

You know, a flash memory drive. I ask because a relative of mine was also still using floppies - backing up financial data etc - and then the discs got eaten by the drive. I told them to just use a flash memory drive and they have found great for the kind of things they used the floppy for. Floppy discs and drives are not terribly reliable. A flash drive stores more data, is solid state and thus the chances of things going wrong are less. You can get a 512MB one for under $40 and it will plug into any PC with a USB port. Better option than a floppy.

I didn't mention I also have Duke Nukem and Doom on floppy. Bought them years ago and still play them when I want a break from fs9.

526336 2007-02-21 00:07:00 Very interesting I will return and provide a set-up :D
I couldn't get my way at home the other time when they didn't want to play games maybe this is a better target.
