526010 2007-02-20 03:35:00 Check out Vodafone NZ site for advice on diverting your NZ number to voice mail. Otherwise someone calls you and starts chatting as if you're in NZ and before you can cut them off they've cost you another $10! (They aren't aware that it's costing $$) You can get a relative in NZ to check voice mail if there's any risk of important messages being left. Or at least you can clear them all in a single call back to your NZ voice mail, say every week.
And check out Vodafone Netherlands web site for call and prepay card costs etc. Vodafone European sites usually have an option to switch to English language. And when you buy the card ask the sales person to set it up for English-speaking voice mail - unless of course you can manage Dutch language.

526011 2007-02-20 03:55:00 It's only a personal phone, so won't get any work calls. Basically never get calls on it either. Not much texts either. It's used big time for organizing sports games though, which I won't be doing while on holiday.

Yep, will leave the 027 at home now that I know I can do everything on the 021.

Thanks for that shopping info Steve.

Oh great:
"If you haven't roamed before then you will need to get set up. Global Roaming is subject to credit criteria. To get set up, just call 777 or visit a Vodafone store at least two days before you travel."

I leave tomorrow, so it's a bit late for that. I rang 777 and there didn't seem to be any options about global roaming anyway.

Looks like it will be the local sim card option.

Thanks guys :)

Hopefully I won't even have to use it, but knowing me, I will get lost at some stage.

The only way to go. Hey, even my wife used her Vodafone cellphone with new SIM cards in Italy and England and she is so anti-tech / tech useless that it took her 2 yrs to learn how to turn her laptop on and off.

To get to the 6 floor tech heaven shopping mall, Sim Lim Square, take the tube/train/subway to BUGIS station - its a well known station and you'll probably wind up going there anyway as there is good shopping and tourist attractions. Here is a partial view of the mega-electronic mall:

If you do buy something overseas be sure to get an international warranty, not just for Singapore.

BTW, Sentosa Island (reached by public transport) is a worthwhile visit as its beautiful, green and devoid of the compacted buildings of Singapore-proper. But it will cost a bit of $$ to do things there.

Have fun choosing live frogs to eat at places like the fast food chain Eminent Frog Porridge. No kidding!

Same here although McD's is a good place for toilet stops. :D

Some of the exotic food is quite good. Once for breakfast at a cheap food court that locals go to, we had peanut pancakes. They did not look like our sort of pancakes but they were surprisingly tasty and my wife usually does not go for weird dishes.

BTW, air conditioned shops are a godsend. The heat and humidity can be stifling.

Have a great trip - Bon Voyage!!
