526427 2007-04-16 22:34:00 Its not just expensive for the 8800's, its also waste of time with my cpu (bottleneck), not to mention AGP bus, only 1 gb ram and of course another PSU cause the 460TT wont be enough, so, I'll keep this until DX10 games are here and its worth a new system altogether SolMiester (139)
526428 2007-04-19 00:34:00 8600 GTS cards are out now but people seem dissapointed with them.

As regards which platform to go for my opinion is if you want best performance/clock speed go Intel core 2 duo, if you want best performance/money go AMD X2 -

yes intel is faster but so what? is it really necessary to buid a system that can achieve 200 fps at 1600x1200 etc ?

Just be sure to avoid intel dual core as opposed to core 2 duo

If I was building a gaming maching right now I would go for 8800GTS 320M version - outperforms all current DX9 cards and is relatively cheap ( well $400 ish)

How many 8800GTS's have you seen for $400? The cheapest on Pricespy is still $511!

526430 2007-04-19 23:42:00 sorry my bad - must have been thinking of something else I shoulda said $600 ish

Still the card I'd choose though, for me 1280 x 1024 is my target and the 320 M version is just as good at this res as the 640 M one as far aa any info I can find.

Toms hardware is my main source of video card info, I find too many others sites based more on opinion and synthetic benchmarks than real world testing.

I cannot stand that guy, I used to be such an Intel shrill and 1/2 those benchmarks he does are incorrect, if you want a decent site for hardware review, anandtech is much better.

I'll pinch a floppy drive and keyboard/mouse from existing stuff.

You'll see I'm big on quiet - which bumps up the price of course. I'm not a gamer or music buff, so I'm sticking with on-board video and audio. So,

Is this a sensible spec?

Are there any big conflicts/inconsistencies? Have I forgotten anything? What level of Vista is the on-board video likely to support?

526433 2007-05-01 04:45:00 I would wait a little for ATI to bring out their DX 10 card and check its specs, and to drive the price down on the Nvidia DX 10 cards down.Which can charge/and are charging whatever price they want without competition from ATI.

And maybe get a factory overclocked mid range card from either company, but it has to have 512mb or more ram for me.:D For future gaming.

A DX 10 card is the future why buy yesterdays tech?,that no one will wont to buy later on,when you want to sell it.

2gb of ram is standard for any serious gamer,on XP and if I had Vista I would get more probably 4gb.The amount of ram is of more concern to me then the clocks it has.(This is just me I like having more ram.)

The Agp pcs are still good for gaming if you have decent specs.,if not have it as the internet computer/homework/multimedia computer for the family/others and free up your new gaming computer for you and only you,ha-ha.

And you could wait and wait and wait. When is this Socket changing For your CPU? What DX10 card can you buy today? I mean right this minute. To fit in your current motherboard. Along with whatever CPU.

1. And what save some money, let the prices drop, get a better graphic card. You think Ati are not going to bring out a DX 10 card?Of course they are!!Use GOOGLE!

2. This is something you have added,I have not talked about a cpu-You need to READ before posting !@$%^&*

3. + 4. 8800GTX and 8800GTS and 8600GTS and 8600GT and 8500GT.
READ MY SIG. READ WHAT MB I HAVE,WHAT CPU I HAVE,WHAT GPU I HAVE.:D

Go and flame yourself,YOU are not being HELPFUL AT ALL!!:angry

526435 2007-05-05 10:33:00 The beast I am in the process of building right now:

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 - 2.66GHz Quad Core
Intel DQ965GFEKR motherboard
4GB DDR2-800 Ram
4x 250GB Seagate SATA drives in RAID 5
Gigabyte Geforce 8800GTS 640MB graphics card
Windows XP Pro
Lite-on 18X DVD-RW drive
22" Dell LCD monitor
Raidmax Case and 500W PSU (a really good deal from Ascent on that)

This will be fun.

_____________

This is interesting and I would like to hear other members views on weather there is or is not a problem here. The motherboard has a 24 pin power socket, while the PSU has only a 20 pin power connector.

It there some work around, or are these two component incompatible?
