| 526407 | 2007-03-27 19:47:00 | Couldn't be bothered reading 8 pages ... Now that I have non-state earned dollars, I am thinking of upgrading my current system with this (later this year): AMD 4400+ x2 CPU (or better if prices keep dropping) Asus mobo possibly gig of matched RAM nVidia card (still to decide which one) Not state of the art, but only 1G spent |

| 526408 | 2007-03-27 21:28:00 | I pretty much wanted to know if there are any major flaws with the system I've chosen? Cheers, -Glen Do you need Vista Ultimate? You could save a bit of coin by going for Vista Premium. |

| 526409 | 2007-03-29 11:32:00 | Righto, after weighing up the pro's and cons and deviding by my bang-for-buck outlook, I have settled on a few items for my next rig. I have no intention of spending $400 on a cpu when a $200 item will do within a few percentage points of the same output, especially when the difference is so small as to be hard to measure, and impossible to notice unless your testing for said differences. Plus, This frees up $200 for the video card, Meaning it will spank the rig I would otherwise have built. First, What I am not getting An LCD, My CRT has a stunning image, WTH was I thinking? ( I was thinking 23" LCD.....mmmmmmmm) Vista-Price isn't an issue, Especially as its pretty much the same cost as XP, Performance and drivers aren't an issue, Mere hiccups, The fact that half my expensive and much used Apps wont work is THE issue, My computer has one purpose, to run my selected programs, Everything else is just unneeded fluff. If it cant do that single job then it is worthless. Anyway. CPU-AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+, Powerful and cheap. Motherboard- Asus M2V , Positive is 4 PCI slots and price, Negative is it uses a VIA chipset and I swore off them years ago. Time will tell if this is a poor choice. RAM-1GB gerenic crap, I dont overclock so see no reason to buy expensive stuff. Maybe bump it up to 2Gb at a later date. Video Card-ASUS 7900GS 256M PCI-E, Reviews/benchmarks for this card are killer, especially at this price. HD-Whatever, Think I have a spare somewhere. |

Good prices, making me wonder about upgrading... $200 Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (approx prices found on PriceSpy) $100 Asus M2V $100 1 Gb RAM Thanks for starting this thread, Metla. Gives me plenty to contemplate. Egad, quad cores are expensive! |

| 526411 | 2007-03-30 00:15:00 | Well, I'm stuck with AGP, 939 at present so next upgrade is going to hurt... 1st thing I'll go for is a nice 22"+ wide screen as the 17" just doesnt cut it anymore, the daughter can have the 17". I'd like either the G80 GTS32Mb, or maybe one of the revised G84/86 when they come out for DX10 and a decent card to drive the LCD. Of course a better cpu will be req'd to make the most of the card as the current will bottleneck, so thats a new mobo with RAM and cpu.....dang, it will hurt. |

| 526414 | 2007-04-09 14:46:00 | I would wait a little for ATI to bring out their DX 10 card and check its specs, and to drive the price down on the Nvidia DX 10 cards down.Which can charge/and are charging whatever price they want without competition from ATI. And maybe get a factory overclocked mid range card from either company, but it has to have 512mb or more ram for me.:D For future gaming. A DX 10 card is the future why buy yesterdays tech?,that no one will wont to buy later on,when you want to sell it. 2gb of ram is standard for any serious gamer,on XP and if I had Vista I would get more probably 4gb.The amount of ram is of more concern to me then the clocks it has.(This is just me I like having more ram.) The Agp pcs are still good for gaming if you have decent specs.,if not have it as the internet computer/homework/multimedia computer for the family/others and free up your new gaming computer for you and only you,ha-ha. |

The problem with AGP is that your throwing money at an outdated platform. Sure the X1950PRO might get you an extra 6months on your current system but with games like Supreme Commander starting to utilize dual cores and benefiting from these faster CPUs its only a matter of time before a CPU upgrade is needed. It makes even less sense if you consider how cheap AM2 based Athlon systems are, i just spec'd out a system for my girlfriends family that uses onboard video and reuses their optical drives for $500 and thats with a Silverstone PSU! At least any PCIe card brought today can be used for a long time to come. |
