731675 2008-12-22 00:07:00 I just received a belated birthday present from my son, in the UK.
A "Blue Next" GPS and a usb bluetooth device.

My son thought it would go well with my "eeepc701". Which currently runs the standard "Xandros" OS it came with.

It could be a bit of a mission, setting up Bluetooth on it.
Hence this post; what do people think?
I'm wondering whether I should install XP on it, or struggle endlessly to no avail trying to get it to work with Linux.
Oh for some real geek ability:stare:

731676 2008-12-22 01:14:00 Having done bluetooth on both WinXP and Ubuntu on the EeePC, both were just as easy / difficult as each other.

Im not entirely sure what the details of the device are though, so cant comment on compatibility.

To be honest, Bluetooth is easier in-general in XP, and Ive never done GPS in Linux so again wouldnt know.

If you've got >512MB Ram, try installing XP on your EeePC, it runs surprisingly well! :)

Even with just the standard 512mb it runs fine too...

731678 2008-12-22 03:48:00 Thanks Chill & Somebody,
I think I'll install XP.
However, How did you guys install it? Can I copy files from my WinXP Pro slipstreamed cd to a pen drive & install that way?

I find the manual a bit ambiguous.

731679 2008-12-22 04:07:00 I got me an External USB 5 1/4" Caddy, grabbed an optical DVD Writer for $40-ish and was away laughing.

Make sure you have at least SP2 (Ideall SP3) slipstreamed or it'll fail.

731681 2008-12-22 05:21:00 These two links look like pretty reasonable instructions for Linux, albeit for configuring bluetooth for external cellphone web access.

I haven't tried them as I don't have an eee pc, but I'd be interested in knowing how you go.

If you do overwrite the Linux install with MS Windows XP, I hope it's a fully legit install.

I have 3 legit versions of XP (2 XP Home & 1 XP Pro) and XP installed on 2 machines, so I should be good to go, as long as I get the licence keys right.
Actually quite a few hoops to jump through here, so I might put the project on hold for a few days - get Christmas out of the way etc. etc.
I might see how the thingee goes with my Toshiba laptop, just for starters.
I might have a look at those linux links of yours first though.....you never know:rolleyes:

731683 2008-12-23 20:20:00 I've got XP installed on the EeePC; from a USB thumb drive only:horrified
There were a lot of hoops to jump through and some little tricks to go with this (if people are interested, read the comments below the instructions - the hal.dll problem is one that tripped lots of people up);

www.eeeguides.com

I originally tried with an "nlited" copy, but I couldn't get it to boot. So I just grabbed my slipsteamed XPPro disk and used that.
The full version is probably not ideal, but I can put an sd card in the slot for extra storage.
Next, set up Bluetooth and see how the GPS works:D

731684 2008-12-26 20:39:00 I've had another go at this, I just wasn't happy with the full XPPro installation. It was huge; the EeePC was bulging at the seams and the lid would barely close, it bulged out everywhere:eek:

So I "nlited" an old XP Home install that I haven't used for a few years, and slipsteamed SP2 into it;

Just a tip for anyone doing this and wanting to install from usb thumb drive only; make sure that you leave "manual installation" unchecked, as this is needed for the next step.

Then I used this guide;
www.eeeguides.com
I followed it extremely carefully, and it worked very well:cool:
One thing here; the hal.dll issue, does not need to be a problem, if, when a reboot is required, the esc key is used, and you boot from usb.
Don't remove the thumb drive until the very end of the install.

Followed up by going here;
support.asus.com
and installing the latest drivers for "Chipset," "Audio," "LAN," "VGA," "Wireless," and under the "Others" category, "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Driver."
It all works fine:thumbs:
