1432574 2017-03-26 11:26:00 I say raise the retirement age. Give people no choice but to work for what they want so there is more resources for those who have legitimate reasons for not being able to. More resources should be put into educating people to look after themselves.

Too many people focus on what they are entitled to rather than what they can make for themselves. You can plan retirement around a pension or plan a retirement and then earn it.

For me (28y/o) retirement is a long way away and with current world economic / leadership situation there is no way in hell that I'm relying on them for my retirement. Both my wife and I have kiwisaver but even if that is available when we retire we will need more to maintain the lifestyle we want. Our goal is to put X amount in long term savings every 6 months or so. In our eyes if we aren't doing that then we aren't earning enough and then earning more becomes a short term goal. This could come from your current job or from another source. I'm on a salary so I don't have the option of extra shifts etc but we still find things like the odd website build or my wife sews baby clothes and puts them on trademe in her free time. These things don't require any training or financial investment...just a little motivation. And if these aren't an option then give something up.

It's unfair to say to a checkout operator "hey, why don't you open your own supermarket" but if they wanted to earn some more then look at ways to turn hobbies into income. Google can teach you how to do virtually everything that doesn't require a qualification to earn from.
