1432515 2017-03-06 09:40:00 Today Bill English revealed a very modest plan to increase the age for super entitlement. Labour, etc etc oppose it. For what reason .... to defy the odds and try to get votes. I will no longer vote Labour. Misty (368)

1432518 2017-03-06 19:44:00 Labour originally wanted to raise the age.
There were protests about that, and Mr Little is against it.

Mr Key was too, but Mr English likes the idea.

Personally I think it's stupid.

Why raise the age? Cause it's going to cost more. But thats because it's given to absolutely everyone, rich, poor, working, not working?
Tell me why rich and/or working people should get it?

Oh yeah, so they can get theirs...like Mr Peters. Why bother I don't know, pocket money to them.

Meanwhile as they raise the age more old people will struggle on the dole and that demeaning process as they wait to get older.

The generations coming into working age now will not get super as we know it today .
By that stage there will be 4 working per 1 on super . Thats not sustainable and will turn NZ into Greece.

Means testing is really just fiddling around on the edges, and wont make a big enough difference to the costs .
And means testing punishes those who saved hard, worked hard & didnt hide their $ away in trusts & overseas hidden assets. It rewards those who didnt save.
Im sitting on a Ak house that will be worth over $1Million when Im retired , just a basic cheap & nasty house. So do we means test everyone
who owns a house...why not. Its an asset that could be sold to fund retirement .
Do we means test those who sell their only house & therefore have a bunch of cash ?

OMG, how? It eliminates loads and loads of people from being given it.
Punishes those who worked hard. Uhuh.

So anyone in a labouring or cleaning job sat on their bums did they? I somehow doubt it.

It's the usual whine from those who want the pension and have plenty of money.
Why should they?

It's no different from any other from of welfare, except it's for the old.

Because they contributed the most to it. I wouldn't give the "Professional Bludgers" anything, let alone the same amount. :(

Those with lots & lots of money are very much the minority. What we would pay to them is a drop in the bucket.
Where would you draw the line ? Who says who has too many assets to deserve the pension. Anyone owning a Ak home would easily fit in that category.
Means test it & then anyone who has saved would need to use up savings first, as with any other benefit.

Agree with the last comment.
Lets call it what it is. Welfare . Not a right just because someone "worked all their life" , we all did .
Its welfare . call it welfare & then you can easily justify means testing it, just the same as any other welfare payout.
It certainly started out as a welfare handout . Then it became election bribes .
