| 732271 | 2008-12-24 12:12:00 | I have an HP DV5 1004AX Entertainment Series Laptop that needs a replacement screen (original is smashed). The original is glossy. Is there an advantage of Glossy vs Non Glossy? I also have a Toshiba M5 which has a non glossy screen and prefer that because of the reduced reflection. Had a look on trademe and ebay for screens. Found one on ebay for 179.99 US + 45.00 US Postage.. eek! Theres ones on sale on trademe that fit an HP DV5000/6000/9000 etc series.. will they fit on mine? Anyone know any good places i can get a screen from? Cheers! Merry Xmas!!! |

It can be quite tricky if there isn't any service manual available, unless you've done it before! Further more, service manuals are not easily available. Go to your particular model number and download the maintenance and disassembly PDF. This will be able to tell you in detail how to disassemble and put it back together. Just a note. Make sure to write down where all the screws came from otherwise mayhem could ensure. All you need is a smallish phillips screwdriver and about an hour to pick and replace. As for the choice of screen, matte coatings are better outside, but then again when was the last time you used it in direct sunlight? Glossy coatings have a filter too to increase the readability of the text and images. LCD screens for laptops are all of the same quality, as in, a 14" screen is just that. Just check the pin connector as this may be different. There's a laptop repair place in NZ, "laptops repair" or something. They're in the yellow pages if you look. You might be able to find something more reasonably priced. Good luck Mr X. |

Had a look at the disassembly instructions from the HP site as you suggested so doesnt look too bad after all to do myself. I've decided now to go with the glossy screen seeing that's what it originally came with and there will be little outdoor use i think. Will nosey for the laptop repairs place you mentioned and sound them for some pricing. Thanks again everyone for the suggestions :) |
