731821 2008-12-22 07:54:00 Hello.
I turned on my PC this morning and it took atleast 3-10 mintues to get past the boot screen, which is the default Windows Xp one, and it usually takes 2mins max, which is even rare. (Safe mode is the same)
Okay so I finally got it booted to my desktop, and realised that one of my 500gb hard drives is totally gone, not in the bios not in admin controls, no where in sight. So I have tired different power/sata cables/ports and nothing helps it is just a paper weight with power, yes the power still works fine.

Specs:

Windows Xp
AMD 3.2ghz x2 CPU
ASUS Mobo M2N-SLI deluxe
80gb IDE hard drive, most likely seagate.
150Gb seagate IDE
2x BARRACUDA 7200.11 500GB SATA (one of which is the drive in question)

Need any more info let me know.

EDIT: I have done a CHKDSK on the C drive and it found nothing.

731822 2008-12-22 08:03:00 Are the 500 drives in some sort of RAID? gary67 (56)

nope, and to confirm that, as my PC starts up it says no raid to be found, which is not the cause of the problem as it has been like that ever since the 500gb hard drives were installed.

How can that help, my computer does not recognise the hard drive at all. It is not even found in the bios.

731826 2008-12-22 08:50:00 Being SATA - open the case (with the PC Off) and check that one of the sata leads or Power Plug has not come lose or fallen out - some of the earlier leads had this problem.

If they are still connected, disconnect them, then reconnect - could be some dust/dirt got in the connections.

If still connected, disconnect the suspect one, and see if the PC boots any faster without it - it is also possible the drives decided to die, or try another connector on the board in case the one its in has died.

PS: welcome to PF1.

As stated in my first post I have tried and retired different sata cables. The same cables that work perfectly with my other healthy 500gb drive don't work with this unwilling one. And I have tried all of the cables that I have.

EDIT: Cheers for the welcome, I have been here before but I am back for good.

Do you happen to have another PC to test the 500Gb drive on. <--- This is to test if its the drive or MB not liking this drive for some reason.

I see the cables work with another drive, but have you tried another spare drive to see if that does work OK. Out of the 80 , 150 & working 500 Gb is the boot drive ( OS loaded on) ?

How does the PC boot if the suspect 500 Drive is not connected ?

Do you happen to have another sata drive you can put on to see if that detects, or another PC to test the 500Gb drive on. <--- This is to test if its the drive or MB.

I have have 2 SATA drives as I also mentioned above, and the healthy, working one works fine with all the same cords, and SATA ports. And I do have another PC in the house, but it does not have SATA. :crying I am waiting for another computer savvy friend to come on MSN so I can go around to their house and test this drive sometime. But until then, any food for thought? Any ideas on my 1st problem concerning booting?
By the way, the 80Gb HDD is my Master/OS drive, the 150gb my Slave and the Sata drives are obvious.

Cheers

731830 2008-12-22 09:17:00 When you are able - I think you need to test the suspect 500Gb drive on another PC as you mentioned - that way if it doesn't detect then theres the problem, other wise could be chasing your tail going nowhere.

IF you have another ( any size) sata drive you can try connecting that and see if it detects, other wise regarding the booting - it could be slow trying to load a faulty drive - have you tried disconnecting it all together and booting ?
