731771 2008-12-22 06:26:00 Hi All,
For the past week I have had a persistent lock up problem on Firefox 3 and also Chrome after about a hour of surfing
Firefox that I mainly use just shows "stopped" on the status panel.
Sometimes I can carry on using Chrome but then that will lock up too.

The only way I can fix this is to do a restart, then it runs fine again untill the problem comes back

I have cleared history from Firefox and deleted most addons apart from WOT

When I do a restart often the restart happens straight away , other times it waits for 3 mins before activating
Also other programs like Google Earth sometimes work after the browser lock up, sometimes not

Major changes to my Vista computer recently, updated from 1 gig RAM to 3 gig 4 weeks ago, updated Zone Alarm free about a week ago , updated Flash about a week ago

Any ideas ?

Thanks

731773 2008-12-22 07:57:00 If you set a system restore point then you could try that. or uninstall Flash, which could cause the problem, maybe? does it lock up when you view flash in your browser?

this might be something: www.ubuntugeek.com but it's on linux, i think....

731774 2008-12-22 09:51:00 Wow, that took a while
Just done full scans with PC Tools ThreatFire and Avast
Nothing found

Gary, is there any particular reason you mentioned malware ?

I have suspected Flash, a while back my computer would sometimes crash crash when visiting YouTube , then it come right for no particular reason I know off, and now this problem

I will have a go at uninstalling Flash and then reinstall in the morning

731775 2008-12-22 17:41:00 No but often it's the first thing I try if I don't know why a system is playing up just to rule it out as malware can do that gary67 (56)

Try switching zone alarm off for a few hours....see if the problem persists, could be an issue with zone alarm, check the web site.

731777 2008-12-22 20:52:00 Uninstalled Flash this morning
Had both FF and Chrome going at same time
FF stopped after a hour, Chrome 20 mins latter

SolMeister,
I updated to the latest version of ZoneAlarm about the time of the problem but
cant recall if it was before or after.
Checking ZoneAlarms programs panel I see FF has ticks beside
Access : Trusted and Internet
But question marks beside
Server : Trusted and Internet
I have now ticked those 2 so I will see if that makes a difference
If not I will close ZoneAlarm down and heaven help me , use Windows Firewall

731778 2008-12-22 20:59:00 Chrome uses IE too doesnt it for its options?

Look in task manager and see whats using the CPU when it happens

It could be a file Vista uses, thats causing it

731779 2008-12-23 06:43:00 Damm !
Turned off Zone Alarm and are operating with Windows Firewall
Problem has just occurred with Firefox and now using Chrome

My CPU usage in Task Manager is showing 6%
Not to sure what I am looking for in Task Manager Speedy,
but I did notice that Firefox exe was still sitting there at 78,256K
even though it is not a running application
Three listings of Chrome but I guess that relates to the number of
tabs open

Other programs always running, Avast Anti Virus,Spyware Teminator,
Super Anti Spyware,AVG Ant Spyware,Treatfire,WinPatrol
