529395 2007-03-07 01:40:00 courting What a beautiful old word which brings back many fond memories - however I always understood it to relate to social behaviour leading towards marriage. As these ratbags were already married ...... etc. Scouse (83)
529396 2007-03-07 02:31:00 "Let's not forget the sex was consensual"..?

Maybe my memory's at fault (hard to keep track of all these cases by now), but as I recall, the woman in that early case said it wasn't.
Otherwise, why was he charged?

"Consent" was Rickards' defence. The jury took his word over hers.
That doesn't make it fact - merely their opinion at the time..
And it happened before accusations arose from anyone else...

529397 2007-03-07 02:45:00 Just to add - in case of misunderstanding -

I'm not suggesting he was guilty in the recent case - just that he's unsuitable as the public face of Auckland policing.

He needs a 'different' police job.

Don't know whether to laugh or be embarassed...I am guilty (to use a themed word) of being old-fashioned on some things.

Hmmm......

Guilty as charged apparently, never mind innocent until proven guilty. Well judging by the mob in Wellington tonight the fact that someone is charged is sufficient to prove their guilt when you're conducting a witch hunt.

529400 2007-03-08 09:47:00 Mob is the correct word, Damn shame.

Ugly is another word that would fit.

As would pathetic and possibly retarded.

529401 2007-03-08 10:16:00 No smoke without fire, and someone tell me why a teenager would wish to have sex with policemen twice her age.....

I wouldn't mind finding someone 1/2 my age to nail!

529402 2007-03-08 11:50:00 So the women that were in the "angry mob" tonight were just being troublesome because they could get away with it? I don't think so. Why is everyone ignoring the hairy gorillas in the room, everyone knows what happens when the is an imbalance of power between individuals let alone one between older men and young women.

Pur...lease, I have been around men all my life and I know exactly what their behaviour can be if there are no restrictions or controls and young woman are playing games and generally acting up as they can do with a bit of alcohol or whatever in them.

Just take a look at these guys, they are brutalized by the job they do and full of hate and anger, it is on their faces. Two of them have already been found guilty of rape. They are guilty for sure and if the law can be manipulated as we have seen so many times in NZ and elsewhere it does not mean that the women in general who have been on the receiving end of male domination and control all their lives should not raise a ruckus in response to this outrage.

This is supposed to be a free country and it's about time there was some action against the entrenched interests here. Just because these men have "droit de seigneur" attitudes towards what they view as trashy females does not mean they can do as they please with impunity, especially as they are supposed to be policemen.

I'm still not clear what is wrong with a jury finding someone not guilty (or guilty for that matter) based on the evidence .

And as for young women (or young men for that matter) playing games - sorry they should take responsibilty for their actions, not bleat on years later about being victims .

I have teenage kids and certainly wouldn't want to them to get into the clutches of rapists, but neither would I want them to end up in court being charged with things they didn't do . But if either happens - I'll have to put my faith in a jury, for better or worse .

529404 2007-03-09 20:00:00 Years ago women and girls were blamed for rape and incest 'it must have been the girls fault' and all the rest of the male dominated society crap. Very few laid charges, most police laughed it off and some parents threw out their daughters because of it. Many still think the same way.
Better not to judge womens' behaviour in the past when you are too young to know and are male to boot.
