| 529385 | 2007-03-05 19:24:00 | The trouble with our court system is that it is not actually geared around finding out the truth . It is more like a comptetive debate . That's why I want my attorney to be wearing gold and diamonds like Mr . T . It impresses the jury and the other side in the "debate" . . . after all, how could he afford all that bling if he loses his cases? |

| 529386 | 2007-03-06 10:38:00 | Different scenario - Your teenage daughter is drinking with big burly local cops - much older than her. Group sex is proposed. It happens. (This is the one he admitted to) Do you decide that your daughter really had "consensual" sex? Or were the odds loaded against her making a truly free choice? Hardly an equal argument, eh? Even if she did agree ( but later denied) young girls shouldn't be pressurised by any older men en masse - let alone cops. These women were all kids - presumably chosen beause they'd be too scared to complain, thinking nobody would believe them. Clint Rickards wasn't the worst - but certainly old enough to know better. Sure, he may be a great cop in some respects. But he's still a sleazebag. So give him a job where he's not expected to typify the morals of the two & a half thousand others in the Auckland police district... You'd be pissed off in the extreme at the cops and possibly want to do something wreckless in response. You might even be crazy enough to get her to fabricate rape complaints against half the Police force. Hopefully way before we'd got to that point you'd suggest she take responsibility for herself and that it would be unwise to run around bars talking to big burly cops. |

For their betrayal of our trust and their utter lack of respect for the innocent and vulnerable they should rot in jail for a long time. | zqwerty (97) | ||

| 529391 | 2007-03-06 23:51:00 | There are two different issues here. Rickards was found Not Guilty = Not Proven = Innocent (in terms of our law) on two different and separate charges of rape. So he can't lose his job for that. However, he did acknowledge behaviour involving group sexual encounters with young teenage girls when he was a police officer in his mid-20s. I'd say that shows moral turpitude and a distinct lack of judgement. Some occupations require higher standards of behaviour than others. Thus doctors, counsellors, lawyers, etc all deal with vulnerable people who need to be able to trust them. So when a person in such occupations breach that trust or show they are prepared to use their influence to take advantage of others, then they lose their job. Police officers are prime examples. |

That's what I meant to say, Winston... ... only you did it so much better. And why didn't I remember that wonderful expression - moral turpitude? |

| 529393 | 2007-03-07 01:00:00 | The technical term is "gang bang". This is one of the many types of moral turpitude for which the "Gangs" have been abused by "right thinking" people, including police spokesmen. The fact that it's part of the police (gang) "culture" too has been ignored. | Graham L (2) | ||

Police officers are prime examples. Yes. I concede that point, though I stand by my earlier comments. There may have been an abuse of power, but let's not forget the sex was consensual. As such the other party must accept responsibility for this as well. If the woman/women are old enough to be in a position to be courting cops, then they are old enough to understand the consequences of their actions. My thoughts go back to the whole "Police Bar" thing, which I will share a thought on later when I'm not at work.....Wellingtonians will probably know what I'm on about... |
