732393 2009-01-14 00:46:00 Thanks qazwsxokmijn, you've been a real help ( :) ).

I found your PSU (www.computerlounge.co.nz), it looks good but it'll stretch my budget even further (DDR3 RAM isn't cheap either).

My remaining questions:
1) the world of CPUs (HELP!) - there are SO many. I need a cheap one to start off with (sub-$150), and later I want to upgrade
2) Will these components fit in my case?

Thanks a lot, I'm nearly there ( :) )

732394 2009-01-14 00:52:00 You should REALLY buy a new PC instead of upgrading it but,

For a cheap amd CPU you should go for the Athlon X2 5200+ 2.6-2.8 ghz cpu maybe....

Don't worry about it fitting in your case or not, it will DEFINETLY fit( well the parts we're choosing right now anyway, cpu, mobo, ram, etc)

732395 2009-01-14 00:53:00 Does this power supply work with ATI GPUs, as it advertises Nvidia SLI ready, but the mobo I'm looking at is CrossFireX (www.elive.co.nz)? darthcarnate (14113)
732396 2009-01-14 00:55:00 Thanks blam6, that's noted.

Is this better than the 2.8Ghz Pentium dual cores?

732397 2009-01-14 00:56:00 Wait a minute - the mobo I'm probably getting is Intel P45 LGA 775. Do AMD CPUs work with this? darthcarnate (14113)
732398 2009-01-14 01:06:00 No, you should get th mobo previously mentioned, the Asus M2N-MX SE Blam (54)

You may not be buying a new PSU, but keep in mind that TruePower and NeoPower/NeoHE (the one I have) are two different PSUs and that the NeoPower series are more stable and robust.

732400 2009-01-14 23:29:00 Yeah, I found that one too: www.elive.co.nz

It's actually slightly cheaper.

This motherboard is far inferior to the Gigabyte GA-EP45T-DS3R motherboard that I am currently set on - it has far less connections, supports only 2 slots of DDR2 RAM (as opposed to 4X DDR3 RAM), can only have ONE GPU, and, as far as the AsusTek website says, doesn't support quad-core CPUs, an upgrade I want to make in the future.

The Gigabyte board I am looking at supports both cheaper dual-cores and high-performance quads. It may even support the new Intel i7s.

732402 2009-01-14 23:44:00 Didn't you say there was a $700 budget lol? Blam (54)
